That’s how I’m reading the room. And with the education discount $499 is super cheap.

Base looks like it would handle all the needs and probably most of the random wants I have for a while

In true apple fashion the 256gb storage and high cost to add is just annoying… but is life in the ecosystem. Id probably just lean on my external for extra unless missing something here.

Any true value in the +$200 to go from 16 to 24gb memory knowing I’m not doing anything super intensive here but also not complaining if it gives me a little upside in both capability and longevity?

Absolutely not. That price jump is an absolute scam

I’ve got an m1 mini with 16gb and m1 Air with 8gb. Rarely but on occasion, I push the limits of 8gB of RAM.

I’ll be really honest: I’m not sure what this whole “AI” craze is actually about or what the real impact on the typical user will be. I’m imagining it becomes a slightly more-robust Siri and the manufacturers up the minimum specs in such a way that the demands are covered before you think about it for typical use. I’m not sure what “heavy” AI use is, would be, or its impact on resources. Rarely is more ram the bad choice. But if you aren’t planning on running VMs, you’re probably fine with 16gb. If you will do some of that, you’ll certainly appreciate more and quickly. There’s no substitute.

256gb is laughably stupid. But a WD 8tb external is $150, and 20TB is a hair over $300. Local storage is becoming less and less of a requirement as people are spending on the cloud. And if you aren’t depending on the cloud, you’re probably depending on a local NAS.

Satechi and probably another brand or two has made this nice expandable storage and port expander for the Mini for several years. I’m fairly certain there are dual m.2 and 2.5” variations

I go both ways on this:
1) obvious shortfalls for internal storage upgrades are absolutely ridiculous

2) having the popularity and long-term commitment to form factors that allows for a nice 3rd party expansion market is neat, though the premiums charged to match the ‘premium’ product are akin to the ‘rack tax’ and I’m just not paying it (I have a synology nas instead).

On a completely duh moment, I realized how silly $200 future proofing is when I could just get the new cheap mini m6 when the time comes if I love the product. Base level it is.

Bump

Anyone get theirs yet and have an early opinion? I’m waiting a few more days since I ordered through Costco.

Curious on monitor and other accessory ideas? This is my first Mac and only have a 3 screen setup for work which doesn’t require digital editing. Standard mouse/keyboard.

Got the base model last night and set up. It's replacing an old Hackintosh that started getting long in the tooth. Very snappy, love the IO options but there is a lot of USB-C. Got it currently plugged into a Thunderbolt dock I had for my usb-A devices, no issues here.

My plan is to get a M.2 NVME Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and a 2 tb external and have it live on the desk. I've heard ACASIS brand thrown around - any one have any insight on what's good?

How well would the base model work for hosting Plex server and transcoding streams? My current SFF windows device is probably on its last legs.

Extremely well. But you could buy a number of SFF desktops that won’t be noticeably worse for that sole purpose for half the price.

Bought mine day 1.

Didn't really need it, but for $499 and the trade in value on my 2020 mini, I figured why not. It's a crazy value.

Because of this thread I went ahead and got one. I just bought two new monitors and I was wanting but didn't need a new home computer. I'm canceling my Sapphire Reserve this month and for November they have a 50% bonus for Apple products. I have a ton of Chase points that I'm not using right now so I figured what the hell.

Can you get or when can you get them with the 10g Ethernet port?

Ah I had looked the other day on B&H and it wouldn't let me select that option so I assumed not yet. Thanks!

Curious is this for gaming?

Been waiting to future proof my setup and this Mini has me very interested.
