Apple allegedly throttling iPhones with old run down batteries

A Reddit post over the weekend has drawn a flurry of interest after an iPhone 6s owner reported that a battery replacement significantly increased the device's performance running iOS 11. The ensuing discussion thread, also picked up by readers in the MacRumors forum, has led to speculation that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to retain a full day's charge if the battery has degraded over time.
...MacRumors' Geekbench scores for iPhone 6s before and after battery drain
Wear level was somewhere around 20% on my old battery. I did a Geekbench score, and found I was getting 1466 Single and 2512 Multi. This did not change wether I had low power mode on or off. After changing my battery, I did another test to check if it was just a placebo. Nope. 2526 Single and 4456 Multi. From what I can tell, Apple slows down phones when their battery gets too low, so you can still have a full days charge.

Low Power mode exists because people often will choose battery life over full speed/functionality. If true I really don't have a problem with this other than the lack of transparency. I find my iPhone 6 frustratingly slow now that iMessage has so much bloat in it. If replacing the battery would get its speed back to normal I would definitely replace the battery. This is an upsell opportunity for Apple. They should give users the option and if they don't want the performance hit the battery life will be bad enough that they either go to Apple for a replacement or decide it's time for a new phone.

Not in Apple's vocabulary.

How easy is it to replace the battery?

iPhone 6 is easy and with some practice can be done in about 15 minutes, 6s or above is much more challenging due to the waterproofing adhesive that requires the display to be removed.

Thanks. My daughter has a 6. Might consider changing hers out.

It should be done at a service center. There are videos about doing it yourself but you could easily damage your phone trying to do it.

Service centers are for the birds. I've changed parts out of phones before. Never the battery but i'd leave the old one in before i took it to a service center.

i was using my wife's 6S last night and it was ridiculous how slow it was to pull up maps or anything else..and this is on my local 5Ghz wifi 2 feet from the router.
My ***ANCIENT*** nexus 6 runs light-years faster by comparison.
I literally couldn't believe how slow this phone was.

They give you a low power mode. If this is true it's kind of similar and would give them the opportunity to sell you on an overpriced battery replacement or convince you to buy a new phone. I don't see the downside with the upsell opportunity.

My 6+ has recently gone to shite, to the point where I bought an 8+.
Apple has cornered the market on low key product cycles.

But my Nexus 6 has gotten dog slow lately. I reset it and it was good for a couple days, but got super laggy again. I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem, and I'm not sure it's worth it. I think the phone knows I want a Pixel 2 and it's giving me the go-ahead to get one.

mine slows down if my battery level goes under 30% for some reason. i haven't reset it in several months so its due for another reset.
and she has the 6s+ i think..its the bigger and newer of the 6 iphones. it was nice and snappy until recently and now it seems to take forever to load web pages & apps.

The manufacturers definitely know you want one.....

Funny, I got sick and tired of my battery running from 100% down to 20% in about 4 hours so I had it replaced about a month ago. I did notice that the speed was improved as a side effect. I thought it was just because the power was back though.
