Airless Tires to Arrive in 2024: How Does it Work? Do You Need It?

quote:

Airless Tires are coming for the future, and it would be the next-generation upgrade for the current rubbers that are slapped on most vehicles now, despite the many changes it went through.

One of the most significant changes here is the removal of the inner tube, making it the "tubeless" designs, as pioneered by Charles Goodyear and made commercially available by the likes of B.F. Goodrich, Michelin, and Dunlop.

However, fast forward to almost a century, the tubeless is now looking into airless technology, and it is pioneered by the French tire maker and known food guide expert, Michelin. Its concept and prototypes have been seen all around social media, and it is the Michelin Uptis or Unique Puncture-proof Tire System which they have pioneered.

Sounds good, but will my pressure warning light stay on all the time?

One less dash warning light for my wife to ignore.

Can it handle muscle car torque and .92 g power slides? How about autobahn 150 mph speeds?

Why don’t they put a sidewall on them? They’ll look more normal, likely increase lateral stiffness, and prevent any debris or anything from getting into the structure.

My assumption would be weight, as well as would hinder the ability to monitor structural integrity during use.

Yea, that thing is going to be a massive debris collector. Not to mention driving on a muddy road.

That'd be amazing if they figure out how to make these where they are comfortable and quiet. I guess it is only a matter of time..

Maybe it's just for display/marketing purposes so you can see the internal structure? Maybe the final version will have a sidewall?

Edit:

However, its side wall is different and unique, as it is open, and is not hollow (for the air to fill).

Well, I was wrong.

These are just prototypes to show the inner design. It's most likely that the final products will be enclosed.

Imagine driving down a gravel road.

That thing would be slinging rocks like a machine gun.

Why? The tread is what is making contact on the gravel not the inside of the tire.

I’m sure if they get these things working well they’ll figure out how to close the sidewalls without causing problem.

this might not be the final model or maybe its a status thing for the early adopters. i remember how weird the teslas without a front grill looked originally and now i don't even notice when i see them on the road.

i imagine they'll have all types including some with sidewalls.

debris has to be able to exit or it will build up.
