Mainly a thread for parents of football, ahem, soccer players. Feel free to discuss, bitch, moan, celebrate what’s going on in your world as a soccer parent.

Some annoyances I’ve noticed over the years:

-rec/academy clubs (U6-U9) who run the hell out of a star player for the “win.” This is supposed to be a developmental stage.
-rec clubs who merge their teams to form “super teams” when facing a historically better club. Not talking about tournaments. Just regular weekend matches.
-fields that don’t allow dogs. Go to hell. I’m looking at you Abita.

Youth coaches prioritizing results over development is ubiquitous in my experience, across sports.

My son’s team is off to a good start this Fall in their first competitive season. They may have been placed in too low of a bracket based on club size and history, it will be interesting to see how they do if they get bumped in the Spring.

The cost of youth/club soccer.

Not enough "elite" coaches at the younger ages to focus on the development- many clubs gear these coaches towards the older ages which is arse backwards.

Not enough soccer education for parents.

Our club offers rec as well as the recreation district so there are manageable options for families, but once it gets to the older, competitive teams I think it contributes to losing so many players beginning around age 10. Especially with baseball and basketball eating up time and financial resources as well.

I live European football but absolutely loathe US soccer. Especially kids and coaches that emphasize “dribble until you lose it” types of play while demonizing possession and ball movement.

Taking someone 1 on 1 might be the least used skill of an EPL player yet for some reason our coaches here think soccer talent begins and ends with this ability.

Unless the team sucks, then we are not to focus on the results lol

It’s because some idiots don’t pick up the dog’s shite.

My biggest gripe.. the parents and coaches treatment of referees and then complain because there are no decent referees in the state. I wouldn’t do that job for a $1000/hr to deal with that abuse.

My 8 year old kid is the best athlete on his team. I overheard his coach tell him before the first game a few weeks ago that he was playing him at CM because he wanted him to get the ball on defense, dribble it all the way up, and shoot. Absurd. Had to pull the kid aside and have a quick chat.

Yea I hate that shite too

For my 8 year old it then turned into he’s got a a monster leg, so he wins the ball and then launches it the length of the smaller field they play on

Or he just tries to score bangers from far away

Coaches just over emphasize the better players just taking over the game and doing what ever the entire time.

Having to drive 4, 5, and 6 hours away to play games at 11 years old when there is enough good soccer in my area to never need to leave the metro.

Half the clubs in Houston won't play each other b/c of recruitment of players and coaches. Always driving to San Antonio, Austin, or Dallas.

Been both... parents have always been assholes, and some go too far, but refs have gone soft. "Bad call ref" will get you tossed these days.

This is insane for soccer, baseball, etc. No need at a young age to do that much traveling. It’s all about game time and reps.

I agree. The downside is if you don’t play travel ball, you don’t get real coaching. Then when they get to high school they have no chance of making the HS squad. Shitty situation all around.

I was listening to Men in Blazers this week and they were astounded to learn the cost of youth soccer. Apparently Northshore soccer is more expensive than the Chelsea Academy.

Yep, it's completely insane and detrimental to the kids and families but in competitive areas you have to do it to even have a chance to play in high school.

It's so unnecessary too for kids that live in large metro areas.

Currently my son is playing recreational but has mentioned that he would like to play competitively. The Dynamo have a really good program but it is not cheap.

I have a daughter who plays at a pretty high level at U12, my son is not really into sports and plays U10 rec. The difference between the two is actually pretty remarkable.

Anyone still in rec at that age really has no chance.

Can you delve into this more?
