But to a lesser degree the same is true of Lukaku, etc., so I wouldn't say it's a US development issue as much as a issue for everyone, that extremely physically gifted players don't refine and improve certain parts of their game because for their entire youth they never have to. Maybe this is exacerbated in the US, but I don't think it's because of the coaches so much as the talent level just generally being lower.

Galatasaray would be a terrible place for Zardes. He would botch some easy goals and the press and fans would be on his case from the start.

However, if he could deal with the hate, he would eventually be given some credit for being a total Energizer bunny on the field and helping back in defense.

In other countries just bc you are bigger and faster they don't stick you up top. B/c in youth development it's not about wins and losses like it is in America. I was one of those kids who was faster and played forward until I broke my leg. I was just lucky enough to had a natural ability to play center mid or CB.

Just look how technical Boyd is compared to most our forwards

How long has this new guy been posting? Quality stuff. Should have his own sitcom. Maybe NBC Sports will pick up the pilot.

He really is terrible

He can't even pretend to play the part properly.

He needs to sit down and watch East Enders or something

touch by accident and I cheer like we just netted one. Then its right back to rally killer Zardes.

he had a play against Colombia where he dribbled past three defenders in the center of the field. He's got tons of potential. He's just gotta refine it. He's only 22 or so. Jurgen probably plays him for his speed out wide and because he scores goals.

Are we really comparing Lukaku to Zardes? One is one of the best youn strikers in the game and the other isn't in the conversation.

Sounds like he got most of his dialogue from Green Street Hooligans. Maybe he's Elijah Wood?

Lukaku largely relies on his physical gifts but his touch is mediocre to outright poor from game to game, not sure why you would think anyone was comparing overall talent level, just guys who get by on their genetics

He's a much better finisher and knows how to get in poacher positions. That is stuff developed at the youth level.

Talking specifically about touch though, Im not trying to debate about all the ways Lukaku is a better player than Zardes, just pointing out he's a guy who has a mediocre/poor touch potentially not developed because he's physically gifted.

Touch is something that is natural but as a kid if you work hard at it you will eventually have an average one. His looks like it neglected until he became a pro.

And a lot of those kids play multiple sports. Sorry but the US will never progress. Too much other shite going on that hinders the development of these kids. They need to head to Europe at a young age and be entrenched in the culture of it.

So you think his first touch is adequate on the international level?

Very true. Kids need to commit to the sport at very young age. Problem is American parents want their kids to try everything. My dad made me play baseball two springs when I should have been with my travel team and in the winter trying to play basketball and indoor soccer was just too much. Kids in Europe at an early age know what track they are going to take. Kids here pretty much know by age 10 if it's football or rugby.

Due to the rules the earliest they can go to Europe is 16 and that's if they have a relative with an EU passport. If not its 18, so the MLS youth set ups need to keep improving. Send the best kids over seas when they can and the rest stay home and become the backbone of the league and improve its quality.

Zardes will always be a necessary "evil" for the national team. He finishes decently, but he's a physical presence, and that's his best attribute as an American player against CONCACAF teams. As long as we have to go down to places like Guatemala City and San Pedro Sula, we will need strong, fast center forwards that can bully and tire 5'8" Latin American central defenders. They will be derided for their lack technical abilities, but serve a key purpose in qualifying shite shows. Conor Casey bailed us out in 2009 with his gawdawful touch and pace. Eddie Johnson was a scourge for CONCACAF opponents for years, because they couldn't physically compete with him.

Edson Buddle would be a better comparison for Zardes. Buddle was nothing more than a journeyman MLS striker, until he caught fire in early 2010 with the Galaxy. All he had to do was position himself well, and finish balls in from David Beckham and Landon Donovan. Zardes has a similar role with the Galaxy now. Eddie Johnson was a better athlete in his youth, with a worse touch, a lack of tactical understanding, and an insufferable attitude problem. Zardes just has a bad touch in comparison.
