This tournament is supposed to be a spectacle. A colorful celebration of world cultures and the way they each approach the beautiful game uniquely. It’s as much a festival for the entire world as it is a tournament when it’s done right.

This is a dry, characterless, and downright boring display from every angle. The whole thing feels like an afterthought from the host country to the studio hosts. It’s like everyone’s better plans got canceled and they’re doing this because it’s better than nothing.

It’s so underwhelming, to call it a disappointment would be understating it by a lot. Give me USA ‘94. Give me Brazil ‘06.

Give me a ME country in November who bans beer and fun and tries to buy match wins because why not they were able to buy the ability to host in the first place?

Not so much.

Half the groups haven't even played yet. I get your gripe about what the fans are enduring, but that doesn't have much to do with the play on the field.

Argentina just lost to Saudi Arabia.

England smoked Iran.

France is looking like Ole Miss.

Let's at least let the other half of the groups get a game in before we say it's the worst.

A good percentage of sports fans are impatient children that want to cry at the first sign of dissatisfaction

I'm so confused. Brazil didn't host in 2006, they hosted 8 years later in 2014. This post is pretty bad overall

It’s not the product on the field. It’s the utter lack of energy of everything surrounding them. But there is that really cool countdown thing they do...

God bless deuce but he’s not much of a studio personality. Lalas seems like he used to be better than he is now. Landycakes should’ve stayed in Mexico after that one commercial.

The entire host country is one city, and that city was a dusty air field in 1990.

As a host site Qatar provides as much character and flavor as Epcot center and the timing objectively sucks - nothing can grab the full attention of Americans in late November/early December.

Feels like no fans are there. Sterile quiet stadiums. It feels like a Covid World Cup. Which is a garbage viewing experience.

It’s mainly because FOX is garbage at broadcasting sports.

Yeah, it’s upsetting they aren’t displaying the rich history of Qatar. Maybe displaying some beheadings or women suffering would put some color on to the wonderful country.

I know OP is writing this as an opinion piece, but Gabriele Marcotti and other writers have already said as much.

To be fair, Gab has said this about every World Cup that Italy doesn't win... or even qualifies for.
