The World Cup was supposed to provide a tourism boom for the US, but now the fear is it may never materialise. A report, external produced by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) has found that bookings are well below expectations in almost every host city. The AHLA said this does not align with Fifa's statement that more than five million tickets have been sold,, external and it creates a risk that "the anticipated economic lift may fall short".
quote:
The AHLA said the large-scale bookings made by Fifa in all cities "shaped revenue forecasts, staffing plans and preparations". It said this booking policy "manufactured artificial demand" and masked the fact that tourist flow is going to be lower than predicted. Up to 70% of rooms reserved by Fifa in Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Seattle have been cancelled, the AHLA said.

What is the driver behind booking up so many room blocks that you eventually have to cancel 70%? Sounds like a behind the scenes agreement with FIFA and hotels to drive up prices around the time the draw was announced to me.

Their entire theory for this World Cup has been creating the illusion of high demand in order to drive excitement and create the appearance of scarcity.
The reality is that they're going to have a lot of 1/2 full venues, even for big matches. For example, last I saw the US opening game had only sold 40,000/70,000 tickets, and the remaining tickets through FIFA are listed for $2,000+ per seat.
They don't give two f's about filling seats or the TV product, only how much money they can squeeze out of every single person who wants to go.

Just for shits and giggles i checked out the absolute top row for the game in LA, in the corner of the stadium.
$2,100.
$2,100.

Then I go look at the same matches now and there's 10's of thousands of tickets still available, they were just saving them to sell at 10x what they went for in earlier phases. Absolute lunacy.

I got lower bowl midfield tix for $500 for the R32 match in Santa Clara (Would be a USMNT match if they win the group).
The stadiums are going to be full, because there are ways to bypass FIFA's ludicrous ticketing system.
You will have your skyscreamers and fearmongering media who will raise a stink about this leading up to and through the first few days of the World Cup. But once the tournament gains some steam, it will go on largely without a hitch, a champion will be crowned and people will talk about it for a few weeks.
This is the usual cycle for pretty much every major sporting event that is held in a country where the infrastructure can support it.
Don't get me wrong, FIFA has done an absolute terrible job in how they've presented this tournament and how they are marketing it. But, the World Cup is still the grandest sporting spectacle in the world, no amount of bullshite and bad marketing can frick that up.

On another note, every match in Group K will be a first-time matchup. Kind of surprised Portugal and Colombia have never played each other.

I mean yeah, there's stubhub and the like, but someone has to pay full price originally to get the tickets to resell, and the prices now are astronomical.

I literally have tangible proof otherwise

Seems like they overbooked and didn't realize people in these cities have their own homes and people also vrbo or Airbnb.
Even for champions league final I'm reading a lot of people booked Airbnbs in budapest.

Don't blame the consumers......blame the organizers. They have failed the fans and host cities.

You have tangible proof that FIFA is selling tickets for less than they're listed for on their website?

You responded to a post about third party homie

You asserted that the "stadiums are going to be full", which would mean hundreds of thousands more tickets need to be sold at the current obscene FIFA prices before potentially being flipped by third parties.
Is there some charitable benefactor out there that wants to lose tons of money that's going to buy the tickets for full price from FIFA and list them on third-party sites?

Are yall looking/buying tix off fifa site or thru stubhub/seatgeek, etc?
Posted on 5/20/26 at 9:11 pm to AU_RX
Come on guys, there's tons of tickets available for the most in demand matches in the best seats at better than 80 percent off FIFAs prices. You guys just aren't trying hard enough.
