World Cup 2026: Group D (USA, Turkey, Australia, Paraguay) Discussion
Posted on 6/13/26 at 4:26 am

As a reminder, Group D FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Rankings prior to start of World Cup:
17) USA
22) Turkey
27) Australia
41) Paraguay
The Winner of Group D will face the Best 3rd Place from Group B/E/F/I/J on July 1st in Levi's Stadium (Santa Clara).
The Runner-Up of Group D will face the Runner-up Group G (Belgium, Egypt, Iran, New Zealand) on July 3rd at Jerry's World (Arlington).
First, the win against Paraguay was EPIC to take the pressure off the USMNT on home soil to start.
For Saturday's Australia vs Turkey match, I assume that best case scenario would be a DRAW (not letting anyone else get to 3 Points yet). Is that correct?
Finally, I refuse to spell Turkey as Türkiye. You can't teach me one way to spell a country for 40 years and just up and change it.

A turkey draw or loss tonight would be massive. They are the real competition in this group

Me too, but I think it will be a 2-1 loss for them.
Maybe 2-0.
Maybe 2-0.

Pretty favorable pool of potential opponents in this scenario. Potential to face Norway, Canada, or Senegal (among a several others)… But isn’t the “best 3rd place team” from those groups is decided on points and goal differential?
Group B Prediction:
- Swiss
- Canada
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Qatar (e)
Group E Prediction:
- Germany
- Ecuador
- Ivory Coast
- Curaçao (e)
Group F Prediction:
- Netherlands
- Japan
- Sweden
- Tunisia (e)
Group I:
- France
- Norway
- Senegal
- Iraq (e)
Group J Prediction:
- Argentina
- Algeria
- Austria
- Jordan (e)
* Most likely teams that we could possibly face if we win Group D are bolded.
I don’t feel incredibly threatened by anyone outside of a potential Senegal or Norway match.

A Turkey/Aussie draw would be massive.
Would have us standing alone in 1st place with a +3 GD advantage on 2nd and 3rd.

I've always felt that a person (or, I guess, a country) should call himself, herself or itself whatever they prefer and also use their own preferred pronunciation. Thus Ceylon becomes Sri Lanka, Burma becomes Myanmar, and so on.
Nevertheless, I'm still working on remembering the new spelling.
Also, I'll miss saying Hungary took Turkey and fried it in Greece. Or maybe not.
After last night USA looks really likely to get to the knock out round.

How about the Socceroos!
I didn’t love the two goal differential though.

I can’t get over how incredibly stupid Montella is for Turkey. Playing a 5’8 winger up top who barely scores goals for Fenerbache. W t f

Get bent Turkey (and your alternative spelling)

A tie in Australia-Turkey obviously would’ve been the best result but the Australia 2-0 win still increased our odds of winning group from 68% prior to the match to 72% so can’t complain.
Love that Turkey were dumb enough to provide a scrappy Australia team with bulletin board material they needed before match. Outside of score line the match stats confirmed Turkey was the stronger side as they said so big win for us in the end to see them forced to chase the rest of the way.
after match day 1 prediction market odds to win group are as follows:
USA: 3; +3; 72%
Australia: 3; +2; 19%
Turkey: 0; -2; 8%
Paraguay: 0; -3; 1%
All we need is a draw against Australia on Friday now to be guaranteed 1st place headed into final match day of group against Turkey. The betting odds for US sit at 84% double chance of win/draw vs Australia so ipso facto that’s the likelihood we’ll be on top of group headed into Turkey game.
The most likely outcome though is a win against Australia which would put us 3 points clear of the rest of the group and at that point we’d be in an unprecedented position playing from the front. Would essentially just need to avoid losing by multi-goals to secure 1st on GD tiebreaker on match day 3.
Bottom line gotta love the outlook right now!

The Aussies beating the Turks was EXCELLENT for us. Not just in terms of winning the group and advancing, but also ensuring that we realize we need to take Australia seriously. Australia was setting up to be a trap game, and now we have been put on notice.

I’m terrified of Australia. They’re about what we were two decades ago. Very little offensive build up play. They turtle up then look for breaks when the opponent is overextended.
We are a high press team under Poch. Force turnovers with final third pressure from Dest and Jedi, but that leaves us prone to breaks with Ream, Richards and Freeman being regularly exposed.
Turkey learned this the hard way last night. Absolutely dominated possession but simply could not break Australia’s defense and won every stat except the scoreline.

I'm watching the highlights now and Turkey got a LOT more chances than i was led by believe by reading the thread from last night.
Also we are as athletic as AUS if not more. Our athleticism is a big reason why we dominated Paraguay so it gives me hope about Turkey as well.
I'm much more concerned right now with a team who can press our back line and GK than teams who are sitting back

Good keeper play.
Which again mirrors the past US teams back when Friedel, Keller and Howard were between the sticks.

Yep. Turkey just royally fricked up by not deploying Kenan in the first half. Just unbelievably stupid tactics. And for Can not to get in the second half either..just embarrassing. I’d hand Vincenzo his papers as soon as they’re eliminated.

Great point and completely agree. No way they are going to come in too cocky and expecting Australia to roll over. Atmosphere in Seattle is gonna be electric

Turkey 30 shots (8 on target) to Aussie 9 (4 on target). Not what I was expecting when I woke up and saw the score

Scoring first and early will be huge, just like it was with Paraguay. Will get Australia out of their super block and allow us to be patient and avoid the turnovers that can lead to breaks for Aus.
With the early lead we did that really well against Paraguay. If something wasn’t on just recycle possession to the back three and go again.

Turkey is by far more technically proficient/skilled. It was just a classic smash and grab. Irankunda looked pretty scary when countering, super fast.
