I was coming to comment on the originally post. wtf happened to this thread?!

I don't understand why people need to bash sports they dot like. Or be idiot children and post stupid shite on my fb any time I make a post about soccer. If you don't like it, fine. Idgaf. I don't go on and on (and on and on and on) about a sport I don't like or haven't even watched to see if I actually don't like it. I agree that threatened is the right word to use for the tools on my fb. Why does the popularity of a sport threaten people?!

This thread is exactly why there needs to be an active admin on this board, especially during the World Cup.

I have no clue, I like all sports.

I think unless the NFL does something about this concussion issue, potential young football players are leaving it to play soccer by the thousands.

The one problem I see with that is boys HS soccer is in the fall, conflicting with HS football.

High school soccer is played in the spring in many states. Club and academy soccer is impacts talent development far more than interscholastic competitions.

The funny thing is... over the last several years, the more I have gotten into soccer (both LFC and in general), the less I care about the other sports.. I find most games, with nothing on the line, boring to watch...

I still love LSU, The Saints and to a lesser degree, the Pelicans...

Some of it has to do with getting older and caring less about sports in general... I think..

I'm not certain why soccer fans in America get so worked up over what a minority of public voices are saying. There are people in this country who bash baseball, basketball(me), football and hockey. Thicken your skin.

I think whining about soccer criticism and suggesting people are threatened by it is just a means of creating a feeling of superiority in yourself.

I agree. Yet no sport is linked to moral decay, as Ann Coulter did in an editorial (and others have done before, like Chuck Kloserterman).

I agree, but there is some criticism that is plainly ridiculous, and plenty of criticism that is warranted. The international sport is an extremely corrupt game, yet we get ridiculous criticisms from people who insist that they, and they only, have the key as to why America doesn't like soccer. It gets tiring to hear. I've been TD nearly a decade, and have been involved in countless arguments. These arguments are almost ceaseless, they never seem to change, and they are almost universally wrong. Very few criticisms focus on the real problems of the sport, like the corruption inside CONCACAF and FIFA, match-fixing, and other pertinent matters.

TFTC and Crazy4, I'm there with you. I've been fighting this for decades, I liked soccer from a kid in the 70s.

I am RIGHT there with you, especially the last bit. I can't tell you the last time I sat with a single baseball game. Now the ESPN/NCAA Regionals channel showing all the games at once? We watched that for an entire freaking weekend, even my non-sports-loving wife. But that's now the exception.

There's very little, by comparison, of spontaneous bashing of other sports, like there is about soccer. If you're somewhere and a match comes on and you're interested, idiots will always come up and bitch. Watch a baseball game at BWW or wherever, and people don't come up, unsolicited, to trash on the sport.

I've stopped answering and simply say, "I love it, always have." But it's still maddening.

That Americans dislike the game is down to any number of reasons, there's no, one, overarching reason. We know commercial, American TV hates it because of the paucity of commercial breaks. The average American may dislike it, subconciously, for the same reasons, because our attentions spans have been conditioned by regular TV, and other sports on TV. We can't pay attention for 45 minutes at a clip.

Of course, with footie, you tell your wife it'll be over in under two hours, and it's TRUE, you can plan things after watching your favorite side early on a Saturday morning.

The NFL is way too big to fold the way you guys suggest. There's way too much money, too, they'll fight to stay #1. MLS is growing, but slowly, by design (the league brass learned some hard lessons from the demise of the old NASL.) Their TV viewership, as I understand it, is still low and fluctuating too much each season. Meanwhile attendance is growing. Can't always say the same for the competition (MLB, NBA, NHL.) NFL is not the competition.

I agree with you. But it's just a minority of voices. You can't get ten people in a room to agree on much of anything. In a country of 330 million there are bound to be people looking to make some hay through criticizing it. I agree with their criticisms of the overly dramatic flopping, though.

As a tangent, are all international sports bodies corrupt? As a fan of boxing, the various alphabet councils are disgusting and I know the Olympics are fraught with corruption. Now I've seen many soccer fans thoughts on FIFA and have to wonder if corruption is endemic to all international governing bodies.

I think there MAY have been a time, waaaaaay in the past when FIFA wasn't so corrupt, as boxing has seemingly always been. But not any more, we've been bitching the Olympics for well over 50 years. Baseball went through it, but MLB isn't world-wide.

I seriously doubt this. Most people can't stand the number of commercials that pop up during football games.

It's not about the quantity, it's the scale. Coulter gets to spread her idiotic opinions about soccer to the masses. I mean, her article was just completely wrong on numerous points. I don't care anymore if people criticize it. I enjoy the hell out of it and that's all that matters to me. But when this board is inundated by stupid opinions, I'll be pretty salty. This was literally the best board on TD because it avoided the massive amount of immaturity exhibited in the MSB. There was plenty of level-headed discussion to be had. There weren't idiotic threads like this.

It seems like that. FIFA is just the association of football associations. And most individual football associations are organizations with absolutely no oversight, and are full of shady deals. Read this article on Chuck Blazer, a former big shot in CONCACAF, the confederation the US belongs to. It will illuminate a the type of thinking that goes on in these organizations.

I agree with you there, but I've also been teaching chirren for years....out of it now, at the graduate level. I'm actually a librarian, but when they came into the library, I had them for seven minutes, and if it wasn't good for those first seven minutes, I had another 39 minutes of misery.

We are conditioned by TV. Yes we ALL hate commercials, except the funny ones, but our body clocks are timed so that we rest/relax at the 7 minute mark, 16 or so minute mark and again about 22 minutes.

I dont get it either.

Im not a fan of Nascar or baseball, but Im not going to take the time out of my day to go into the threads about baseball or nascar just to bash the sport and the people that follow it. To each his own. And I dont care if you like soccer or dont. Just because you arent a fan doesnt mean I automatically hate you or will bash you for that. Doesnt matter to me. But to take the time out of your day to come on here and just bash the sports and OUR players, is just sad and pathetic.

But it truly is sad. We just advanced out of the Group of Death, and nobody really have us a realistic chance of doing that. But we did. We persevered and made it out of the Group of Death to the KO stage. That right there is a great accomplishment. Teams like Spain, England, Italy, Portugal, Ghana, Croatia, etc are all going home. It should have been a good day for everyone to be happy we made it through and all that.

But no. I get on here yesterday after we advanced and see people posting things like "we backed into the KO stage" and we "celebrated a loss" and that Ghanas goalie "threw the game and we paid him" and shite like that. Are you serious? We baked into it? Do you not understand how group stage works? We werent celebrating a loss. We were celebrating that we advanced in the tourney. And Ghanas goalie threw the game? Right... Do you realize that the CR7 goal didnt matter at all? We would have advanced anyways.

And then there are some people that come on the soccer board and the only posts they make are bashing our own players. There are a handful of people that come on here strictly to bash Bradley. Its ridiculous. I promise you that hes not completing 83% of his passes or he has worked harder than most people in this tourney and ran farther than anyone else. Hes also the focal point for opposing teams defenders. He is never allowed any space and there are always 2 guys on him. And hes still playing ok. I agree hes not playing great and have no problem with someone saying hes struggling, but to come on here and say stuff like "this guy was supposed to be good? Hes horrible. Shouldnt be playing on this team' etc, etc, etc is just retarded. Especially when its from people that havent watched anything but the WC games.

Oh and at the same time, there are people trying to troll in disguise. They are making threads saying "This isnt a flame or a troll or anything like that. Serious question" and then they bash the players or the sport. 1 of those threads was after JJ and Bedoya had their head to head collision. The thread was pretty much calling our players a bunch of pussies and its not the 'American Way' to lay on the ground and that a "bloody nose" , which is a broken nose now, isnt bad and to quit being a pussy. Really? I recall LBJ having to be carried off the court because of cramps. Paul Pierce was put in a wheelchair and carted off, just to come back a few minutes later and play.

Another 1 of those threads was "why are our players so tired?" Basketball players play back to back all the time and football players play on Sunday and then Thursday.... Yea, they do that 1 time a year. And basketball players arent running 7+ miles per game. And we just played a freaking game in the jungle against Portugal and we played our asses off. And it was on 3days rest before we played Germany, when we have been on 4 days rest before.

Its truly sad. This is supposed to be a Worldly competition. You are supposed to get behind your country and support them and all that and unite everyone. Instead, you have good fans that are supporting the hell out of us and then you have another group of people that just use this stage to bash the sport and our players. fricking pathetic.

To the people that arent familiar with the sport and come on here and ask legit questions and support the US and its players, yall are more than welcome to stick around here as long as yall want. To the people that just bash the sport and our players and have no idea what they are talking about and just using the stage to bash and troll and flame the sport and our players, please just stay the frick out. They made a soccer board on TD just to accommodate the bitching that would happen on the MSB. So stay out of the soccer board. And the people that start soccer threads on the MSB arent the guys that post on the soccer board. Its MSB posters posting soccer shite there. And most of the time its to bash the sport and our players.

Sorry for the rant. Just been bothering me since yesterday.

The reason is simply that people have too much 'Merican pride to get into a sport that the US isn't good at (I use good as in world power). I actually don't truly believe those who are so outspoken about it really even hate it as much as they say. They hate the fact that it isn't just something we can dominate at simply by having more resources than smaller, poorer countries, with little effort. Those types of people believe it's our god given right to be the best at everything. So in their mind it's easier to just say, "it's a wuss sport anyways". At least in my personal experience

Lol people in America aren't threatened by soccer, corporations and sponsors are. Only chance for commercials is halftime when everyone is taking a bathroom/snack break.

Umm there are 100s of ads during a match. The uniforms, the cleats, the logos next to the score. The changing boards a ling the sideline. I mean you guys complain about lsu, just look at a soccer stadium.

Yea he had a little bit of space but that is also because he was going away from our goal. He wasnt pressing forward. Which is what I meant when I said defenders arent giving him any space.... I meant on the attack going forward. They are putting 2 guys on him which forces him to not get the ball or makes him get rid of it really quick. Opponents are selling out to stop Bradley and are making other guys beat them. So far our other players have stepped up and done a solid job (JJ, Beckerman, Fab, Bedoya, Beasley, etc). But by taking Bradley out of the match, the opponents are basically cutting the head off the snake. It usually always starts with Bradley. Thankfully the other guys that have some space and taking advantage of that and doing a good job going forward and creating.

And he had a pocket of space for just a second, 4 defenders were converging on him.

The biggest problem with that play was Bradleys 1st touch wasnt that great.
