True, I don’t ever recall these countries being in the World Cup.

In India if you come from a family with any resources you aren't going to play sports.
You are going to focus on school.
Money means everything to them. In a mostly toxic way. There's an overwhelming chance sports will not make you any money esp. as they see it.
There's many Indians who would love to just do whatever profession makes them happy but their families force them into medicine, IT or finance. And some are just into entrepreneurship.
They have a very shitty culture.

The two largest populations in the world by far are China and India.
It’s not all about population. It’s a function of population AND average athletic ability (which has an ethnic component).
How many US born Indians are great at sports? It’s not all about the culture, genetics play a massive role. This is the same reason our best athletes are mostly black. Not to be racist or anything, but it’s very true.
Same logic applies to math competitions, but inverse.

If you understand statistics and normal distribution (bell curve), there are going to be people who fall into the far right end of the bell curve, above 3 standard deviations from the mean.
The logical fallacy here is you are assuming all humans have the same distribution of talent.
Mexico underperforms tiny European countries because Mexicans are generally not that athletic (they are smaller, slower, etc.)

All the best in China and India are busy in manufacturing trying to figure out how to flood the world with cheap stuff.

FIFA will keep expanding the World Cup until China is guaranteed to make it everytime.

Chinese and Indians are not a particularly athletically gifted ethnicity.

this is how we end up where we are. humans have equal moral worth. no human is equal. India could have a population of 4 billion and still wouldn’t be able to field a competitive team

Communism and socialism. Look at Russia and Cuba.
Good point.
Russia has the 9th largest population (143 million) but are #35 in FIFA.
Cuba is 90th in population (11 million) and 164th in FIFA.

It's clearly not population & it's clearly not passion for the sport holding Mexico back. It's one thing to say they don't the guys to play superior euro tactics, but why is Mexico failing to develop capable players??
Mexico is poor but I guess that isn’t a good reason considering the development of baseball players in the poor Caribbean countries.
I think the real answer is Mexicans are small and unathletic.
There aren’t any nba players from Mexico. There’s hardly any nfl players.
Rarely does a Mexican soccer player play for the big European clubs.
They’ve got a 20 year old who didn’t play much that played for athletico Madrid last year but saw little time, and he’s from Alaska and never lived in Mexico.
Another guy plays for AC Milan and he was a substitute for Mexico this World Cup and their fans didn’t like his play this year.
You can look back over the last 20-30 years and it’s rare you’ll find a Mexican player on a big club. Chicabitcho played for ManU. Rafa red card Marquez played for Barcelona. That’s there two best players from the last 30 years. There aren’t any others who played at big clubs and only a handful who play for clubs in the big leagues.
The Mayans were small unathletic people.

As much grief as we give USSF for the youth setup in the US, Mexico is equally as messed up. The insistence of keeping El Tri players in LigaMX really hinders their ability to grow. Their generation that just aged out had a few guys spend their time in Europe, but you saw them underperform on the world/CONCACAF stage. Their new generation are mostly moving to Europe though so they should be getting better, unfortunately.

India broke free from the British empire but they love soccer. They’re just a developing country so it’s tough to invest and develop a deep rooted sports program. Especially when your main concerns are not starving and finding safe drinking water. If you’re rich in India your kids can play both and often do. Mentioned elsewhere but ya they focus on education too. 10-12 hour classrooms 6 days a week.

India just doesn't seem to have the financial backing for any sport outside of cricket. Nor do they seem very athletic as a people. Sports science , nutrition, training, etc I'm sure are extremely well behind the times
Their diet makes them all skinny fat. There are some indians online eating more meat / dairy based diets now and they look a lot better.

Ping pong and badminton are more popular

The only Asian countries that excel at soccer are western oriented (pun intended), so South Korea and Japan.
Even then, those countries still haven’t won anything of significance.
East Asian countries in general aren’t very athletic. It’s why their cultures put heavy emphasis on academics.

China = ping pong

looked it up. India has only qualified for one World Cup, 1950, but declined to play because they wanted to play in the Olympics because they felt it was more prestigious.
Thought it was a quirky piece of history.

India isn’t surprising. Indians are generally unathletic, and the country is still poor enough on a per capita basis, that most of its citizens aren’t even nourished enough to have any shot at becoming world class athletes.
China being so much worse than Korea and Japan is a mystery to me though.

quote:They aren’t very athletic cultures But that doesn't explain it. If you understand statistics and normal distribution (bell curve), there are going to be people who fall into the far right end of the bell curve, above 3 standard deviations from the mean. So surely countries like Inda and China should have well more top-quality athletes than a country like Belgium that has only 12 million inhabitants compared to their 1.2 billion inhabitants each.
Less so for China but definitely for India, childhood nutrition and development means that the kid who is 3 SD above the median in India is about right at the median in Belgium. Average Indian male is 5’5”; average Belgian male is almost 6’0”.
So right off the bat, India is operating with a population of only 50 - 60 million people who can even physically compete with the Belgians in terms of physicality. Then you add in developmental systems, resources, national priorities, culture, etc. India has no chance at the moment until things change nationwide there.
