So to relate this to football, the USA soccer team basically runs a prevent defense for the first 15 minutes of each game. It seems to work just as well as the American football version.

Well, they hadn't exactly played lights out.
They only had 2 goals in the WC, both on PKs. It's not like there attack was kicking major arse, before they played us of course.
