Is that not an important part of the squad?

Of course it is, but unlike what you think it isn't the only IMPORTANT part of the squad.
We have much better squad depth forward, in midfield, and at FB than we did last year. Match that with "same" at CB and you don't see how the arithmetic of that comes out to better squad depth overall?
The only way your arithmetic works out differently is if you think CB is the only position that matters.

I think we are better than we were last year especially at the FB position. I think most still have VVD PTSD from the summer window. And then to see Lovren do a Lovren so far hasn't helped. We still have not gotten Coutinho and Ox settled in yet and Lallana is a huge loss.

I think we've missed Clyne too... the two young guys have filled in well, but their youth shows.. and Gomez isn't really a RB, IMO...
While unspectacular... Clyne is steady..

Oh, come on.
Draws against Watford and Burnley and getting skullfricked by city inspires you? Outside of the arsenal game, a game they lost with the team selection, we've looked like trash in the league. Dropping 2 points to teams like that is what gets you a mid table finish. We were a miraculous save by Migs away from losing not today, after almost conceding on the corner 20 seconds earlier. We've conceded 9 goals, 1 off West Ham for worst in the league. Our glaring issues from two years ago are still our glaring issues. We are 2012 Texas A&M right now

I think the missing variables discussed earlier lead some to not be over dramatic... Our defense isn't great, but those numbers are heavily skewed by one game that we played down a man..
It's been a frustrating week for sure, but I'm not ready to call it in mid September..
this time a year ago, chelsea was garbage and man city was going to walk the league..

Naby is truly a LFC player. Just got sent off for the same thing Mané did last week.

I was watching that and got distracted... straight red?

It doesn't change the general sentiment at this time last year...

Indeed. 7 1/2 months remaining in the EPL season. Nowhere near time for panic.

Tottenham couldn't even score against Swansea today. Guess they'll be lucky to make Europa, then

Its hard to have too many thoughts only from watching extended highlights.
But...I don't want to get drawn into the CB dilemma about not bringing anyone (though I can't help be believe that will be the theme of the season at this point).
The point forward from here is this - either we just learn to live with these lapses (which will be pretty much every game, though thankfully there will be some games where they don't score) OR Klopp will have to figure out another system that protects our defense better. Frankly, Lovren has prove, for years now, that he just sucks. Klavan has shown that he's slow in recognition. There was no need at all to come towards Matip today - Matip either had it or he didn't, but he had the guy and Klavan had no one. And Klavan's not stepping up last week lead to the City first goal.
So...long story short. Get used to the constant mistakes (if you aren't already) because they are here for the season now. We aren't changing systems. The guys we have suck and have zero determination.
We'll be somewhere between 4-6. I think City and Man U have shown they are clearly ahead of everyone right now. Jury is still out on Chelsea. Whether we get 4-6 will depend entirely upon Spurs, Arsenal, etc and how many points they end up with. I think we'll be about the same points as last year. So basically zero improvement overall as a team, mainly because CL etc will bring the rotation that costs us points.

This is correct, but Can (today's "defensive midfielder") also had no one and he did nothing but watch Arfield go charging right by him as well.

Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea helped take a bit of the sting out of yesterday.

Since Sept 1st, Ive had that mentality... At least until January and then we'll see..
I am not shocked when we defend poorly are concede from set pieces...

My thoughts are.. Can appears to have the higher ceiling as a DM over Hendo... I think it was a close call, but his age and Hendo's injury concerns have brought me around.. But Klopp doesn't seem to think so..
He played well as the #6 at the end of last season when Hendo was out.. but... and its been said since he arrived, fricking play him there and let him develop there... he's been moved around way too much... I really think he can excel there if he plays there week in and week out..
I'd be fine with Hendo moving to a squad role as a b2b (what I think is his best position) mid... That would essentially make Milner's surplus and I wouldn't mind seeing him moved on next summer...
edit: well, all the above is predicated on Can signing a new deal and soon...
