The fact also remains that since Berhalter has taken over, the US is 20-0-1 when leading at halftime.
1-0-1 in the last two times

He deserves all of this board’s criticism for the final 30 minutes.
Most people are failing to acknowledge that while he did go defensive too early, he HAD to go defensive late when all of our attacking options were on the bench or dead tired.
quote:
He subbed off a very good right back for a terrible one. He brought in a 3rd central defender and took off a primary attacker who takes defenders head-on.
Dest can't go 90. He was dragging arse. Moore is terrible though. I won't defend Moore, but I'll defend taking off Dest.

Zimmerman won every aerial dual the last 10 minutes of that game.

And he took off Sargent for a supposedly similar player who was atrocious.
Sargent was hurt, but you won't see me defending Wright. He's terrible.

This means he doesn’t know his own players, at least the more obscure ones.
Or that he believes in all his players, regardless of their ability. He strikes me more as this type, although you can’t discount your observation either. Wright and Moore are some odd choices for this team.

To me one of the biggest deficiencies has been a complete ineptitude at set pieces. If we find any success on set pieces to go with our tactical discipline we’ll be a tough out going forward.
Agree on set pieces, and we supposedly hired a set piece guru?

What’s annoying about that logic is that none of this is intuitive. If you put these kids naturally on the field in a pick up game, they wouldn’t magically know where to go with and without the ball. The fact that people think that Berhalter isn’t doing anything should be a testament to the coaching job in terms of setting the team up initially. He’s basically nailed that in each of our group games. We obviously notice when his subs don’t work, partly because so many other aspects of the team do work.
Exactly. Individual talent winning games on their own is seen through a winger or striker or someone like that doing something out of his mind. Midfielders being disciplined, spacing perfectly, and winning the midfield battle for 260/270 minutes is not just "individual brilliance." MMA don't have much time together as a unit, but they're playing like they play for the same club year round. We see that with teams like Spain who usually have Barcelona's midfield to just plug in. The fact that we're doing this with 3 dudes playing in three different countries, all younger than 25 is pretty impressive.

What is it that Haji Wright does well? Look big?
He finishes. Give him service and he will put it away. He's stinks at everything else though.

Today I learned that Haji Wright is Joseph Addai’s cousin.
Would be nice to have Pepsi or Pefok right now, with Sargent possibly out.

Is he really good at finishing? I’ll freely admit I’ve never watched a Danish or Turkish domestic soccer game, but 34 of his 36 career goals have come in those two leagues.
I don’t think we have any idea if he can finish against decent competition.

Shaq Moore
Wright
Reyna on the bench
these don’t make much sense to me

He’s made the bad Turkish defending look bad this year. He’s a big guy but plays very small. I wanted to kill him today when he took that weak arse shot and didn’t take the ball to the corner to kill the game off

Yeah man thats just not true. Our group was hard. In a tournament with the top 32 teams (I know not precisely) we ended up with a top 5 team and 3 top 20 teams. Thats rough. No game is a "should win" game like in some of these other groups which re

Most of you have never had to actually make decisions on a soccer field outside of FIFA and it shows.
You literally couldn’t be more wrong buddy.
He literally changed formation and went to a back 3. So don’t act like he tried to keep his foot on the gas. He literally subbed the entire midfield and brought a CB in who hasn’t shown great decision making ability in the same exact situation a week earlier.
Some of YOU think you’re the only person to ever play soccer and it shows

He brought Walker Zimmerman on in the 82nd minute and then he won every ball in the air after that. So yes, when every attacking option we had was either exhausted or subbed off, he brought on an extra defender that helped to ice the game. Name one manager that doesn't do that in a win or die match in the 82nd minute.

I admit Zimmerman played great tonight.
My point is he shouldn’t have had the chance to win 11 balls. Greg created a problem we didn’t have by pulling everyone back into our 1/3.

Nobody should expect a deep run with this team, but we should expect the manager to do better than Bierhalter has done.
This seems like a contradictory statement considering where we are in this tournament and how fantastic the defense has been

Defensively, he's an asset. But that won't win matches moving forward. We have to play to win. Not play to stay in the tournament. Safe shite won't work.
Y’all would rather lose going all out attack than win playing ugly. I get wanting to play attractive soccer, but the man is paid to make us win, and he has been incredibly successful at doing that despite an incredibly young and often times naïve team.
By far my biggest frustration with this team is the lack of urgency going forward on the break and the lack of a killer instinct. That comes down to young and inexperienced players. It’s not Gregg’s fault that Aaronson, Pulisic, Robinson, and others frequently miss the wide-open option on the break.

Almost pulled a defeat from the jaws of victory today. Need to challenge the dutch with pace and aggression, like Ecuador did.

Quotes from some players after the game
Sounds like good coaching.
The propensity of some on this board to ascribe all positivity to the players and all negativity to the coaches baffles me.
quote:
According to Tim Ream, the goal they did get tonight was exactly how they planned it: “We talked about it before the game. That exact play was how we were going to score. Credit to Serg, you know, seeing that he could hit the ball back across. Christian was told before the game: crush, crush that back post. And that's exactly what he did.”
quote:
McKennie: “I thought it was a good goal, a good team goal. We knew that they would struggle with diagonal balls behind the backline. And that’s something we’ve been working on in the game before. It’s good to see that it helped out and that we executed it to plan.”

Credit goes to Greggg for getting some things right with beginning game formation, roster, and navigating tournament mentality (which is all expected from any coach). But when things are going right, it baffles me at least me, his in game decisions regarding subbing and 2nd half adjustments. When Greggg professedly sets ourselves for good, why does he hamstring us by taking 3 steps forward, then 2 steps back?
We all want USA to do well and get behind our coach, but just when you’re ready to pat the man on the back, he decides to play Jordan Morris or Shaq Moore or parks the bus.
I know pundits have been saying a tale of two halves, but it’s not unnatural to see Greggg’s patterns and think a tale of two coaches at times.
