the attitude was always fearlessness, though. the style of play wasnt great and existed because we were less talented, but i just wouldnt call it the embodiment of fear. we beat spain at their peak, took it to brazil for a half, scored in the last minute to beat algeria and advance, etc...
the guys and the team have always been fearless and had the never give up attitude. they have never cared who they are playing or what their odds are of accomplishing something. we have always been fearless.
also, the brand of soccer we are playing is being overrated, but that's another thread for another time, i suppose.

It was impressive. US definitely had chances to score goals late.

Oh shite, I didn't mean it to be negative toward the US. It was sort of a backhanded slight to the English for the patronizing attitude of their journalists toward the USMNT in general. Hopefully they won't be surprised when we do things the English are supposed to be good at (courage, desire, commitment, etc.) better than the English.
The BBC,and Danny Murphy in particular, were going crazy. Lots of neutrals really seemed to enjoy this game.

You must have a very high standard for goal keepers. Most wouldn't make half of those saves.

I agree with you. Although Belgium had great passing and showed creativity with the ball, their finishes were not impressive. They shot at Howard a lot. They didn't try to place a lot of balls away from him. I think that just shows a lack of maturity in understanding how to finish in those situations. Still, Howard did make a couple of impressive saves.

Yeah, I mean, I don't know exactly what was on their minds but they seemed really genuinely impressed by us. Not only tonight, but in group play also. I've been listening to The Guardian WC Podcast for the last few weeks and the've been raving about us the entire time.

They were also shooting from distance plenty. I'll rewatch the game but there were some dinky headers from 12+ yards. I can't remember all their quality chances though other than the two goals.

Maybe they are coming around. I really am surprised more American players aren't in English leagues, as our players exhibit the workrate and stamina teams and fans seem to love. Maybe they will target some of them after this showing.

I think he made six noteworthy saves. I´m thinking four great, two good. Could be three and three, or the other way around.
He was peppered, but ten were just saves.

Admittedly, causing your keeper to make 16 saves is stretching the concept a bit.
But you seem to be trying to find fault with the defense for allowing shots but not wanting to give Howard credit because the shots they allowed were not the most dangerous types of shots.

If by most, you mean most of the goalkeepers not starting in the world cup, then sure. But most top keepers in the world would have had similar performances.
I have a high standard for Tim Howard.
Tim Howard is one of the best goalies in the world. I was not overwhelmed by what he did. He did his job like we'd expect and have seen him do many times in the past.
Howards saves weren't as impressive to me as his positioning was, which is why many of the saves looked somewhat easy, and that's what makes a great goalie. You can have the best reactions and hand eye coordination you want, if you don't put yourself in good positions to cut down angles, you will get scored on easily.
