Reyna’s work ethic again in question in BMG sale to Strasbourg

The fact that Borussia fell for an expensive sham wasn't just due to Reyna's susceptibility to injury, but also to his work ethic, which he brought to Gladbach after a season in which he had previously played only 341 Bundesliga minutes for BVB. It took months before Eugen Polanski and the coaching staff were satisfied with the 23-year-old's fitness.
“I saw qualities today that I hadn’t seen like that before,” Polanski said in December. Reyna was in the starting lineup four times last season and logged 509 minutes of playing time—a sobering tally.
It makes sense that Borussia isn’t taking the gamble on Reyna and his potential into a second year. Better to “cash out” right away than to “crash out” next year—in other words, better to take the money now than to spend another year kicking yourself and possibly end up empty-handed.
Having worked with athletes there’s a massive difference between those who treat their rehab like a job and those who do not. Part of me is starting to wonder if Reyna’s recurrent injury issues aren’t related to his questionable work ethic. His dad also had injury problems so some of this is likely genetic as well. Here’s to hoping that this move works out for him and he gets his career on track, but at this point it’s starting to look like last chance U.

Meaningless, pretty goal.
He’s a damn Prima Dona and always has been. Talent is there, drive is not. He’s only 23 but the US team should move on from him. Time to put the Reyna hype to bed.

He maybe has issues but it seems a little crazy to put your troubles on a player that barely played.

I agree but don’t think that’s what the article is getting at. They would rather cut their losses with a player with a dodgy injury history and questionable work ethic than put their energy into him for another year, only to likely have the same subpar outcome.

we don’t have anything like him, nor are we likely to in the near future. I don’t know what needs to be done to help him, but a press release from Gladbach ain’t it
whether we like it or not, Gio is going to have a role in the Copa. probably a consequential one. throwing him away while coddling others is a death wish

Ehhh... idk, maybe, but it's by no means a given.
We've been saying "...just wait" on him for a while, but outside of 2021/22 Nations League and WCQ he has largely been a bit player for the USMNT. Which is infuriating, because the talent is clearly there, but the work ethic clearly isn't.
Not sure what event needs to happen for him to grow up, but he's running out of time. You'd think the embarrassment that ensued from the Qatar fallout would've shaken him, but any time he is rightfully asked about it by reporters, he acts like it wasn't that big of a deal and makes it seem like he shouldn't have to answer those questions. He just comes off as very arrogant and tone deaf.

Just goes to show you how shocking the Qatar thing was because, before that, Claudio was viewed as the calm, stoic leader who many USMNT players and fans would say was the most exemplary captain the country has had in the modern era.

Never underestimate a parents ability to completely sabotage personal relationships and reputation when they think their kids aren't getting every opportunity, regardless if there is merit or not.

Sure, I mean I get the anger of it all, but I still have a tough time trying to wrap my head around the mindset of being ok with torpedoing a decades-long friendship through extortion because you're upset that your 19-year-old son was called into the World Cup, but didn't play enough minutes to your liking.
I think the funny/sad thing about it all is that it at least seems that the Reynas think they handled that situation how you are supposed to handle it.
ETA: And it's even crazier when you factor in that Claudio himself didn't play a second in the first World Cup that he was called into.

While this may be so, the Reyna’s have been a problem within US soccer for a long time before Qatar. Even when Gio was playing U15 he was calling up USSF heads and ranting about how Gio needed to be flown first class to youth national team camps. It’s insane. Everyone, coaches and staff included, fly together in coach.
Here is the Google ai summary of just one other example:

whether he plays or not is kind of irrelevant. when he’s on the field in our shirt, he’s the best player we’ve ever produced and it’s not even close.

Then why haven't the last two coaches heavily utilized him, and why are more Americans having much more success at better clubs than him?
