Question about teams purposely losing games in group stage

Not sure if this has been discussed in game threads and I missed it, but...
As of now for group D the table is
Croatia 6 points (+5 goal differential)
Nigeria 3 points (0)
Iceland 1 point (-2)
Argentina 1 point (-3)
The final matchups to be played are Croatia/Iceland and Nigeria/Argentina on Tuesday
Wouldn’t Croatia want to lose like 10-0 to eliminate Argentina? Obviously if Nigeria wins they’d advance but if Argentina won they’d still finish 3rd on goal differential
Has that happened in past world cups? Teams purposely losing or if it was a situation where both teams benefited from a draw they just played it out and finished the game 0-0?

Didn't Portugal sandbag their last match?

The games start at the same time, so it's hard to purposefully lose. If Croatia lost 10-0 and Nigeria beat Argentina, then depending on how other groups look, Nigeria might have an easier Round of 16 tie than Croatia. You want to ensure the best possible matchups, and you can often do that by winning the group outright. Argentina isn't good outside of Messi anyway, so they wouldn't fear them.

Zero chance.
The B team Croatia sends out will want to impress to get a shot of making an appearance in the knockouts.

It's in Croatia's best interest to win this group. If you intentionally throw the game with a high goal differential, you lose the group if Nigeria win. The Group D winner bracket is playing out to be easier bracket. If I was a team like England or Belgium and I already secured a spot. I would throw the group to get this bracket.

Croatia would rather win the group and not have to play France in the first round of the knockouts.

There have been many sandbagging games. Usually it's when 2 teams are playing each other and they both go thru with a tie.
Oh, they fake like they are playing for a win, but they both have a gentlemans handshake to play for the tie.

quote:Croatia dismantled Argentina. Why would they not want a potential Finals opponent they've already crushed to advance exactly?

I feel like I remember the USA having a chance to do this to Mexico in qualifying during the last WC cycle.
Who knows where they'd be now if we had actually done that to them

We scored two garbage goals against Panama (stoppage time maybe). The two goals knocked Panama out and put Mexico through if I remember correctly.
The Panamians were clearly saying what the frick are you doing.

In hindsight it kept Blas Perez from having participated in 2 World Cups so it's ok.

Never thought of it from that angle. I am much more ok with it now.

As much as I love soccer, it’s so corrupt that nothing is a surprise.
But heaven forbid some guy make a political gesture.

Obviously we’ll know after today’s games where Germany and Brazil finish, but if Brazil finishes 1st in group E while Germany finishes 2nd in group F, we’ve got opportunity tor the ultimate tankfest tomorrow with England and Belgium
Both teams are 2-0 with a +6 GD (both have 8 goals for and 2 against). Since nothing separates them there the next tiebreaker would be team with the fewest yellow cards. Right now England have 2 yellows while Belgium have 3. If they were to be equal in yellow cards then the next tiebreaker is FIFA flipping a coin
If Brazil finish top of their group and Germany finish 2nd, then Belgium/England would absolutely prefer to finish 2nd because it would be much easier side of the bracket

because of this didn't they start playing the last game of the group at the same time in the next WC?
