Arguably the world’s best soccer commentator is heading to NBC Sports. The Daily Mail first reported the news that Peter Drury is replacing Arlo White as the lead commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Premier League. Subsequently, sources to World Soccer Talk confirmed the report is accurate. Arlo White’s career with NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League ran from 2013/14 through 2021/22.

In the nine years of commentating, he became a familiar voice for fans of English soccer in the United States. Drury is to begin commentating Premier League games for NBC Sports when the new season starts on August 6, 2022. Prior to this season, Drury has been calling the biggest games on the world-feed, often alongside Jim Beglin.

Apparently this is why NBC isn't renewing Arlo White's contract:

quote:

White came under fire in October in the wake of the Newcastle takeover for not alluding to the controversy and civil rights atrocities surrounding the Saudi Arabian involvement

Seems like a somewhat weak reason to let White walk over.

When Arsenal get battered, at least it will have a poetic voice at the helm. Drury is incredible. And Beglin isn't coming which makes this some GOAT status news

Arlo White is good but idk there is something about his commentary that bugs me slightly

It's not his f'n job to allude to anything other than who might get the pass from the goalkeeper

The Joe Buck of international football announcers, really. I love how he can be understated in huge moments when appropriate

Derek Rae going full orgasm on German names while his German announce partner is just sitting in silence (probably going wtf) is good shite

If you took a sip of weisbier during a BL match every time Derek Rae over pronounces a German term, you’d be blitzed by the 30th minute. Still respect there, but I’m always team Phil Bonney…also GolTV GOAT Alan Fountain TYFYS

I was pretty happy with Arlo. He wasn't incredible, but he was good, borderline great at times.

Drury will be an improvement (thought I admit I haven't had a season worth of listening to him so maybe he gets old/repetitive over time).

Either way, I just want NBC to show as many games as possible.

Huge fan of Arlo, disappointing he will be leaving. But Drury is definitely a step up.

Arlo was really good but they’re improving on him with Drury

Kind of makes sense now that he didn’t allude to it. Looks like he’s going to be the head commentator for LIV Golf which is funded by the Saudis.

I like Arlo.. sounds like he is coming to the Chicago Fire from their twitter exchange.

Peter Drury is definitely my favorite though...
