MLS’s wild plan to fund a Messi move

This is insane
Clearly shows a majority of the owners don’t give a frick about being competitive in MLS and just trying to increase revenue. Rather pay for the opposing player to come in and batter them as long as the stadium is full. But won’t pay for expanding squad size or willing to ditch the salary cap.

In what would be an incredibly unique turn of events, Diario Sport have reported that all MLS clubs could chip in to pay Lionel Messi's wages in an effort to bring the Paris Saint-Germain talisman to the league. There has been plenty of talk surrounding the 35-year-old's future, with his PSG contract expiring in the summer, and Inter Miami CF regularly linked as a potential destination. However, the MLS salary cap structure could prohibit signing the Argentina star to what would likely be a record deal, which has reportedly produced one creative solution. The report states that team owners met six weeks ago and floated the option to jointly pay Messi's wages and allow him to choose the club he plays for. The feeling is that the presence of arguably the best player in football history would benefit everybody in the league commercially, even if only one team would be improved on the pitch.

I think you’re right, and I think they are misguided. This won’t build the fan base in any sustainable way.
I’d be pissed if my teams owner contributed to paying a superstar to play for a competitor, and it would make me less of a fan.

Yea this would probably piss every fan base off
Messi only going to Miami or LAFC

Saw this the other day and it is beyond stupid. Would melt so hard. I'm not trying to help Ft. Lauderdale get better.

Ft. Lauderdale.
That’s a whole different issue about the rules only apply to some when it comes to MLS
Just like NYFC, ATL and now CLT

As someone new to all this, can you expound on this, I'm genuinely interested in what you're talking about.

For years now all new teams must have a soccer specific stadium when entering MLS
NYCFC plays on a fricking baseball field
ATL and CLT both play in football stadiums on turf
The league doesn’t hold new franchises in bigger markets to the same standards as teams in smaller markets.
We also have franchises that don’t even play in the city or state they represent

Ah, got it. Thank you.
This is the first year I'm really getting any exposure to the MLS. And really to soccer in general. A combo of Ted Lasso, Welcome to Wrexham, and a new MLS team in St Louis have gotten me to this point.

This is all about the owners and greed. For me, it will tarnish the league some if this happens. I am a Messi fan but to me no player, even Messi, should not be made to be bigger than the game or the league they play in.

We already know what would happen
A bunch of people only there to see Messi. They don’t give a frick about MLS or the teams on the pitch
Drives up demand and ticket prices
The owners package the Messi game in a like 5 match deal to get you tickets to that game

Everything else I agree with, but you can't really hold this against MLS when literally every major league in the US does this.

Absolutely all it's about. I already have a sour taste for our Clt FC simply d/t charging PSL's for season ticket holders. Only club in league to do so.

Yea but this sport is supposed to be about the club representing the local community and it’s people

Yea PSLs are fricking absurd
Don’t even see that shite in the EPL
But not even a top 10 league trying that shite

Luckily I have a bunch of friends that bought season tickets so I tag along for most games.

This is America baw, every league is about nothing more than making as much money as you can.
Not saying it's right, but you are naive as frick if you think teams (not clubs) represent anything other than dollar signs.

Yea I know
And unfortunately the system in place is holding the game back in our country
