The whole point of the high line is to pin the other team in their half and win the ball back in their half. It’s hard to press effectively and do that if no body is sprinting. It’s also easy to give up goals when nobody is sprinting to recover. We just look lazy tbh, or like their lungs aren’t up for the tactics.

No, but if we're 1 or 2 in the PL for six straight years in burst, and then 17th* 5 games into a struggling season, that should tell you something is different and perhaps wrong.

*don't know our current ranking, this was as of Newcastle game.

Correct, but the literal point of the high line is to compress the field to minimize distance to sprint making it easier to win back the ball. That is going to result in less sprints, especially when you win the possession game every match like we do.

Besides, it's not like the other team is doing anything other than immediately releasing it down the channel and skipping through the midfield and over the line completely.

I completely agree that we have been extremely lazy all over the pitch, but I think the sprint metric is a red herring.

I think that's probably much more to do with the formation spreading us extremely wide all over the pitch than anything else. Besides, 5 games is a very small sample size.

Score doesn’t do it justice. Should have been 7-1.

Hmm… interesting. I seem to remember someone saying a while back that sadio mane was covering up for a decline and being unceremoniously mocked for it. What has changed?

Mane has nothing to do with lack of midfield creativity and the back line being absolute trash. Hell, Diaz has been one of the few busting their arse game after game.

ETA: he is definitely missed, however, that doesn’t account for the gaping holes across the board.

You said Sadio has been covering up a decline since the start of last season. I said we were two games from bringing home a quadruple, so if that's decline, I don't even know what success is. Sadio must've been the greatest player of all time if he was the difference between what we're watching now and almost winning the quadruple.

We had a lack of midfield creativity last year, and the year before

Klopps quotes yesterday indicate a lack of counter pressing allowing the balls over the top was an issue.

I'm also thinking players like Harvey etc. aren't fully used to playing midfield yet, and may get pulled out of position due to their own natural inclinations. Milner being a step or two slower, and boom. Klopp also mentioned not being as compact.

Also saw on reddit a highlight of trent casually jogging and then standing there while they score. Something is definitely off with him. A simple 1-2 took three of our players out of it on the goal.

He's used to Henderson covering for his defensive work, but it seems like much more than that. The jogging around is just inexcusable I don't know what that's about.
