Removing Lucas from the starting XI would have its defensive ramifications
That formation is suicide in my opinion. It's so important to have a player sit in front of the back four, especially a quality player. Give Gerrard the other CM position, and see if the side works better in terms of passing movement. Gerrard has a lovely passing range, and in order to be effective as a player will have to move deeper as he gets older. Give him the chance to adapt to a role, maybe in some games against a lower-tier side. He played that deep early in his career, but he's excelled as a CAM for most of his career. If Gerrard can learn how to set the tempo a la Paul Scholes later in his career, he can prolong his England time as well. I'd love to see him there.
The only way I could see the side succeeding without Lucas is if it was a really flat three man midfield. In this system, the man facing the ball-carrier would have to make sure he didn't get turned goalside, and allow the other two to close down on the man with the ball from a diagonal position in order to win the ball back. Without a dedicated ball-winner, most sides (outside of Man U) would struggle mightily.

ETA Where do you get your player stats?
Opta, whoscored.com, UEFA.com, soccernet, Guardian chalkboards, and a couple of others I can't remember. If I have the game on tape, I fast-forward and count. Other times its just my memory, which is mostly for positioning. Twitter has random stats as well. Why do you ask?

Just curious. Whoscored is an awesome website.

Anybody else thinking that our chances of winning the epl this season good? Despite the manchester clubs putting on goal fests this weekend, im still confident in our team. Im predicting suarez to be the player of the year if he stays healthy. Hopefully andy carroll can get on the score sheet a few times so he can gain some confidence. Id hate to see him get into a huge slump and be a huge waste of money.

Seems like we are being linked to Juan Manuel Vargas, again...
Odd, since LB and LW are in place. That being said, I guess Stuart Downing can always play on the right leaving Vargas for the left (too one footed to play on right).

Not sure if I'd say "good" just yet, but definitely possibly. Once I see how we fair against one of the Manchester clubs I'll have a better idea if its a good chance, or a possible chance.

It's probable, but I would definitely settle for top 4, at this time (ask me again in April/May and I may feel different).
We handled both os the Manchesters easily under KK, last season...all 3 have strengthened over the summer. We may not win, but you won't see what happened yesterday, happening to LFC.

Fingers crossed guys: Afellay
Translated as:
Afellay will accompany Kuyt Liverpool
Liverpool is not finished in the transfer market and reports to FC Barcelona for Ibrahim Afellay, write Spanish media on Monday. A transition would be for ten million euros ends meet.
Afellay pulled in 3.5 million euros for the winter from PSV to Barcelona. The midfielder came in his first six months of regular play, but saw in the summer, Cesc Fàbregas and Alexis Sanchez attracted. His view is therefore playing quite blurred.
Liverpool hopes to benefit from the Catalan surplus. The Reds have to deal with Juventus, which had already showed interest. The Old Lady would be greater benefits seen in a lease transfer, while Liverpool Afellay will finally take over.

Nah. Both Manchesters are on a different level right now.

I was about to comment on how shitty the grammar was until I realizedit was translated

Unfortunately, I think you're right. However, I don't think we've seen the best from Pool, actually far from it. With so many new pieces, it may be November before the side fully gels and we see what we really have...then, who knows.

I dont think they're as far ahead as youre giving them credit for.

I think goals can be scored against both city and united. Plus, our defense has been pretty lights out.

The offensive personel for the Manchester teams is pretty absurd though.

The season is very young. And while the Manchester clubs are clearly the best RIGHT NOW, a lot can happen between now and the end of Spring.

I have a friend with a pretty reliable source that says Afellay is a real possibility. Around 8 mil. However, his wage bill will be huge. Again, this only coming from a friend who has a source (he has broken news to me before though).

Anyone see this? They make a lot of estimates and assumptions so it is not 100% accurate but still very interesting.
By the way Anfield wrap is a very good site and a great pod cast.

So, and here’s the big reveal, our true, as near-as-dammit, estimated crudely, yet probably not miles out, best approximation for net spend by LFC this summer is…….wait for it…….(drum roll) …. minus £1m. One whole million pounds (give or take a million or two)in credit. That’s the real likely ‘price’ of what in actuality will have been a nigh-on revolutionary turning over of the Liverpool squad.
