Torres can't finish anymore, but he created opportunities for Spain that weren't hapopening prior to his entry. He isn't the player he once was, but he impressed me more than Balotelli.

Balotelli's control of a booming pass on the line was as impressive as anything Torres did.

That was spectactular and all, but Balotelli still royally fricked up in his biggest chance.
Saving that ball merely saved possession just past midfield, but getting caught by Ramos cost Italy a goal.
Neither Torres nor Balotelli were particularly impressive.

there is absolutely no precedent for you to assume he would have scored (plus, his angle was shite), or delivered a proper pass, and said recipient then proceeding to score.
Torres squandered an empty net and a last man opportunity.

Balotelli was impressive for his commitment to work his arse off pressing. He was also excellent in consistently excellent in his control against pressure and clever one touch passes to break out of Spain's press and establish possession for Italy.
Of course, he'll be judged on whether he scores or assists goals but he was as important as anyone in the success Italy had in keeping Spain from committing the numbers forward that were necessary if they were to make their formation work. That they got no help going forward from the fullbacks or 2 holding midfielders has everything to do with the threat Balotelli and Cassano were posing.
