Legendary USMNT striker Landon Donovan thinks Christian Pulisic would have been better off joining Major League Soccer rather than AC Milan. Reports indicate that the forward is close to completing a $22 million transfer away from Chelsea, where he spent the previous four years.

quote:

The World Cup is coming in three years. This is once in a lifetime. He’s going to be in the prime of his career, his life as a soccer player, his earning potential — I’m sure he’s making plenty of money — but the ability to come to MLS kind of like [Lionel] Messi did. I’m not so sure that wasn’t a big reason for Messi, the World Cup coming here. “I think it would have been a great move … for the Galaxy to go out and get Christian. Bring him here, pay whatever you have to pay him. Bring an American superstar who has global recognition back to MLS ahead of the World Cup. I think it would have been a great move and I can hear the Twitterverse going crazy.

Sure LD letting CP be a shoe in for playing time in a substandard league in the prime of his career will be the best thing for his career

quote:

“My biggest thing is he needs to play. I know we all said when he went to Chelsea, ‘He’s going to play a lot.’ He didn’t play a lot, especially last year. At Milan. I would think he’s going play a lot but you just don’t know. “So leading into the World Cup, what if he spends the last six months leading into 2026 like he did this year, then what happens? He’s not playing a lot and he’s not in good form going into the World Cup.

Exactly the problem with MLS and American national team players not having to fight week in and week out for their place at their club like in Europe.

How many starters do we have that aren’t over in Europe?

Zero? Maybe one or two defenders and that’s it?

Landon has a stake in his USL team so I’m sure he has some bias towards the MLS but I find it hard to believe that his attitude is what’s wrong with American soccer when the vast vast majority of our team is going to challenge themselves in Europe.

Problem is the guys who stay home and even sniff a call up don’t have to fight for their club place

As for defenders should be none who play in MLS playing for the national team

There is a reason European teams don’t buy MLS defenders other than young American ones who they throw in their academy

You’re overreacting considering there was zero chance Pulisic was going back to MLS and pretty much everyone who follows the American soccer said it was a dumb comment.

I love Landy, he was my first entrance into true USMNT fandom, but he also fancies himself a counterculture thinker and has said a lot of stupid shite over the years. This is the latest.

Yea tons of pundits said it was stupid

I think you are missing the point of the thread

It’s about the mentality with in USSF, MLS and the power players in American soccer

Landon doesn’t want to be the only MNT superstar who backed down from a challenge and never reached his full potential.

No I got the point, but I don't think Landon's stupid attempt at galaxy brain comments mean we're fricked as a soccer country.

No shite MLS wants the best Americans in their league, that be a terrible business and marketing plan if they didn't. But I think everyone knows, and even MLS knows, the league is miles away from even coming close to being able to do that.

To be the best soccer country we can be, we need our best players to be in Europe. Full stop.

With that said, I think preaching "to be considered for the A-squad, you need to be in Europe" mantra that all our USMNT coaches have been preaching since Bob has burned some guys. Take Reggie Cannon for example. Dude basically jumped at the first european offer he got and it turned out to be a shitty situation where he played in a league just as talented as MLS, where he was played out of position and wasn't even getting paid on time.

He would've been better off staying in Dallas for another year and likely would've gotten a better offer.

Same goes for George Bello and Gianluca Busio, who have gone from young talent in MLS to riding the bench in a second division league in Europe. They could've cultivated in MLS for another year or two and would've been better off for it.

Taking the bait. Hook line and sinker. Donovan knew what he was doing. Same shite Lalas does, say absurd shite for the clicks.

All of our best players (ie most USMNT starters) are in Europe. MLS players got what percentage of the minutes at the World Cup? Like 10%? (mostly thanks to Zimmerman who was decent) You’re bitching and moaning about a problem that doesn’t exist.

I mean... that's just not true.

Zimmerman was and still is a better CB than Matt Miazga who spent the bulk of his career in Europe.

Matt was terrible in Europe and is average in MLS

Him going to Chelsea was a career killer especially at that age

Yea but the big 3 would all steam roll MLS

Only side with a remote chance in Portugal is LAFC and they can’t even beat Leon when it matters

Vs Pumas

But we also going to ignore that them going all in on that tournament killed their league form bc they lack any depth

Much like the rest of MLS other than LAFC struggles to compete on multiple fronts

The big 3 in Portugal have much better depth

It was a backhanded insult to LigaMX

But way to ignore the actual post about lack of depth
