Is the current USMNT group really better than the Howard/Donovan/Dempsey era?

With have more talent, technical players, guys at big clubs, but we are in the same position. I blame Bert- hurt-her big time. This coach is choking our guys down.

Back then we had Howard a great goal keeper, a very disciplined back line, the likes of Jermaine Jones being a dog in midfield, Dempsey with grit and hard working non stop attacking the Landy coming in for the kill. They were doing just as great or better plugging in random MLS players with our main 4-5 core players.

We are really just Concacaf champs in our back yard and getting our asses handed to us if we venture in the top 20-25 of teams.

They have to fire Gregg or next world cup with be another boring wash and rinse repeat job and he'll be fired right after.

How the frick do you make a thread like this and leave off the GOAT? You need to take a long look in the mirror and reevaluate your life.

It’s hard to say when you’re managed by someone who is unimaginative, tactically boring, and stubborn

They were one wondolowski shank away from beating Belgium, who arguably had the most talent in the world at that time, in the KO round of the World Cup. And we advanced out of a group that consisted of Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. I’m not sure this team would get out of that group.

Current team is more talented and underperforming due to poor coaching.

Howard / Donovan / Dempsey era team was less talented but performed the same or better than the current team. One might think the current team has the edge because of their wins against Mexico, but Mexico is the worst its ever been, possibly.

We used to have world class keepers. Now we have none.

I agree with Jones, Weston shows flashes of being that but was invisible all game the other night.

Dempsey was great because he wasn't afraid to "try shite" as they used to say. We have more than enough forward players that could do that too but they're either coached not to, or just freeze in the box. Let the boys rip shots off like Tyler's golazo vs Mexico.

We were also a all time keeper performance away from getting BTFO.

Watching the game Saturday I was thinking of what would happen if Klinnsman were coaching and put out the same 11 with the instructions to "express yourself." Even more so with Dest in the 11. It might be an epic failure, but can't say Gregg's rigid tactics are much better at this point either.

Wes had just 17 touches in the first half. He should have beed paired with Johnny in the double pivot and Gio at the top of the diamond. We have a stubborn coach whose plan B is plan A with different players. Former USMNT legends are starting to say things out loud that others in here have said for a while. Gregg doesn't have the coaching chops to lead this team. Get ready we are hearing heavy rotation for Brazil who will be playing there #1's.

Current team wouldn't score on the 2010 World Cup squad. Maybe a 0-0 draw but I'd take the 2010 team.

Edit: The current squad takes on the personality of its manager: soft

Yeah but they love their coach. That's all that matters. Right?

At least the U16 kids coming up look like absolute dogs. They are so aggressive in their attacks

That generation had superior intangibles - it was a nice mix of young exuberance and older heads.

This squad is mostly TikTok gen softies who don’t really know their role on the national level and the cohesion just isn’t quite there. The role/cohesion issue comes down to coaching to a certain extent of course.

That's what worries me about leaving someone like Luna off the Olympic squad. Dude is an absolute dog out there and plays with a chip on his shoulder.

I think this is what we are missing.
Pulisic gets it sometimes.
Gio gets it sometimes.
Mckennie gets it sometimes.

But as a team we don’t play like the rest of the world is against us and we have to prove something.

I’m not saying our players don’t have heart.

And I’m not saying they are soft.

And I’m not saying they don’t play for each other. And are not trying.

But there is something missingg

By what metric is this team underperforming?

They’ve won every continental tournament played under GGG and did about as well as expected in the WC, youngest team to make the knockouts, losing to a traditional powerhouse.

I think people here don’t give enough value to consistent club situations/playing time. That, and playing tough with a chip on their shoulder every single game, sets the generation mentioned by OP apart from the current generation, which is undoubtedly more talented, at least on paper. Feel free to disagree but I think prime Bradley, Dempsey, Donovan, Cameron, and Howard probably start for this team.

I could redirect you to any number of match threads for direct quotes and discussion on this question, including our last one vs. Brazil.

Sometimes I think you and Broski just enjoy arguing for the sake of it.
