I wanna get more into this

I just don't understand it in ways that I want to. I LOVE football and basketball. But I grew up immersed in those sports, playing the video games, watching all the LSU/Saints games, so I'm so much more familiar with the strategies and gameplanning and all the mental/strategic things that make me love those games. I want to love soccer so badly, but I need to know more about the tactics. Without being familiar with them, it makes it much harder for me to watch games.

Came here to say this. Also, watch highlight shows if you can't get into watching full games yet. Also, Men in Blazers is a good podcast for newer soccer fans.
It will help. Here are the list of the better/more relevant teams in the world:
England: Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham (Spurs)
France: Lyon, Marseilles, PSG
Germany: Bayern, Dortmund
Italy: Juventus, Inter Milan, Napoli
Spain: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid

I hope your watching the Premier league weekend mornings on NBCSN. If not you definitely should. The commentators and analysts do an amazing job of breaking down the tactics and strategies in a plain manner, without dumbing it down or beating you over the head with it.
And yes, play FIFA.

People in here are saying FIFA, and I agree it is a good place to start. You’ll learn the basic concepts there if you enjoy video games, but that’s about it. It is very bare bones.
Football Manager (computer game) goes 100x deeper in terms of tactics and how to formulate one that is successful.
Also just watching the games can help you pick up on a few tactics that teams use.

If I didn't have FIFA RTWC 98 I wouldn't be anywhere near the football fan I am today. That will help you pick up player names quickly, particularly if you're playing with a Barca or a City.
Picking up tactics will be more gradual, luckily primers are easy to find online. Formations are a good place to start, get the basics (4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, etc.) Sample

I used to really read Michael Cox's Zonal Marking... it doesn't look like he updates it nearly as much as he used to..

This might sound like a dumb comment, but do you know about offsides rule? 100% of people that tell me they can't get into watching it, don't even know there is such a rule. Don't even begin to look up tactics if you don't understand this rule.
I agree with playing FIFA. Something else that will help is to pick a team to follow. It would be best to pick an English team as NBC shows all those games on the weekends.

Yeah, I'm familiar with most of the rules, I have basic knowledge of formations, I know the big clubs, and I have some knowledge of some of the very basics of the tactics, I guess I'm just saying in order for me to REALLY get into the game, I need to understand it on a moderately deep level.
In regard to fandom, I was drawn to Manchester United the season following the 2014 World Cup (the year Leicester won the PL?) basically because they were the club I was exposed to the most and the earliest once I tried to pick a club to follow. I didn't learn about how rich they are or how dominant they were under Ferguson until later and after I had committed to United. Honestly, sometimes I feel guilty, but they suck now, so I guess it's okay

Nothing wrong with following United. Just know that they are a frustrating club to follow at the moment.

The one thing that really stifles my interest is the no playoffs. It's just so weird that a sport perfectly suited for playoffs doesn't have them. And all the various Cups detract and convolute what is important and what isnt.

It’s not suited for any sort of playoffs at all. It has a lot of the same lucky shite mechanics of hockey that can let a lower seeded team often upset a higher seed, but because the physical demands of the sport are closer to American football, they can only play two games in relative succession without playoffs taking three months.

That's because league play is designed to avoid playoffs. A round-robin league with a home and away series eliminates the need for playoffs. It's the most robust way of finding a champion. The cup competitions are important in of themselves, a point which seems beyond your ability to grasp.
