I love all these new soccer fans and record ratings but...

Am I the only one who seems to want to guard the sport from these Johnny come latelys?

I'm referring to the guys who are talking about rule changes: stopping the clock, I heard one guy say that red cards should have that player sent off but still allow 11 men, timeouts (which they tried in an u23 cup), etc.

The first WC I watched was 1986 with my dad. We've watched every single one since and have been to 2 of them (USA 94 and SA '10). All of a sudden people want to turn soccer into the NFL. That's not what it is.

Eh. It comes from a lack of understanding. My dad always says stupid stuff like that when we watch together (he's not a soccer fan), but it's clear that he just doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.
If they become real fans of the sport, they won't want to change it (much).

But to answer your question, no you are not the only one. Hipsters everywhere are a bit turned off by all of this mainstreaming.

We were all JCLs at some point.

I agree with the changes though. I like soccer because it isn't like the other sports. Let's keep it that way.

Don't be that guy. They'll fade away and return when the Copa Centenario and Euro 2016 return. Then they'll be off again. However, it's the young ones who will remember this as their first World Cup who will be rockin' in the free world with us along the way.

I still remember watching '90 in Hawai'i with my pops. He was so excited that we finally made it back. He kept telling me that I might not see that again for a while

That's how I became a fan. 86 hooked me. 90 was magical. 94 made me cry because I thought we would win it all on home soil (Lalas is still eating off his 94 run). Unfortunately, my 4 year old likes watching "Lebron fly" as he puts it.

I don't mind new fans.
The only thing I hate is that half the people on the board are trolls, that make me suspicious of new fans. Unless it's a legit good new fan question I immediately think they are a troll.

Your attitude is a really bad one to have. This board has sorta sucked because of the defensiveness of the posters in general. It does get annoying reading really stupid threads but the quality of discussion has been severely watered down this WC. Hopefully it perks back up after the WC.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Once they truly fall for the game they will forget about rule changes and appreciate the sport.

But it has to start somewhere.

This. Half of the people who post those rule changes are just trolling because it drives people nuts here.

no I don't think that's what people want.

You have people new to a sport who don't understand some of the rules so they make suggestions on the things they don't get yet.

I think the real problem is that you're just kind of a big floppy wet douche.

I agree, some ideas are stupid and not worthy of discussion.

Once upon a time, Professional football had a JCL who suggested they make the football more aerodynamic. The forward pass become more prevelant and the game has become the most popular sport in our nation.

Not all changes are bad, and it would be a disservice to paint with such a broad brush.

No you're not the only one, and honestly it's one of the biggest barriers you soccer lifers face with exposure to your sport. You want the sport to grow yet anybody who wants to be a casual fan gets looked down upon like they are uncultured or an outsider.

Why would I want to become a fan of a sport when the people look down on me for not living and breathing it?

Very fair. However when you're at a bar and the person next to you says this sport is "dumb because they don't stop the clock" or have "unlimited subs and force teams to play with 10 men when a guy fouls out" is a bit annoying. Just enjoy it for what it is. I'm not a soccer snob, I don't walk around Round Rock in a Messi jersey like these suburban dads.
