I pull for Marseille since I lived there for a while but I can't be bothered to watch the games. I prefer the EPL and support Arsenal because I started playing FIFA about a year after the 2006 WC, which I had been in France for. Zidane was my favorite player and he had retired, so the next best French option was with Viera and Henry who played on Arsenal. Hence, Arsenal became my team. I learned more about them, the players, the coach, the philosophy, and became a true fan. Got to visit the Emirates while I was in Europe and I hope to one day see a game.

i didnt really choose the club, the club just chose me 
but seriously, i'm pretty young and soccer wasnt the most popular sport in the town i grew up in, i played when i was younger but got interested and altogether uninterested, in other things during high school. i have some family from germany so i always found myself rooting for the german national team. i started playing fifa (lol right) and experimented with differnt teams, i liked playing with bayern, but didnt consider myself a "fan." in 11th grade i made my parents get the sports package and started watching fsc, that was pretty much all epl, i found myself cheering for no one in particular but did have a soft spot for the old man city. the stephen ireland man city
. that evolved into a softer spot for harry redknapp, and it's carried over to the dempsey era (disclaimer: i dont really watch much epl, but when i do, i cheer for the jews ( 
))
about 4 years ago i found goltv and rekindled the bayern flame since they were the majority of BuLi games shown. i've started following a lot more since then and visited the stadium a few years ago. too bad it was in the summer and i couldnt see a game. loved the city of munich and hope to live there one day.

I picked my team when i was about 10 watching the champions league on espn2 after school circa 1995. Once my dad got dish and we got foxsports world i really got to watch all the matches and most EPL games from other teams.

as a kid i always liked real and ac milan
i follow players more than clubs now. it just so happens that real has my favorite player and a bunch of other guys i like. AC bores me, so i don't really care as much about them
i like man city b/c they have a shite ton of guys i like. i used to like tottenham, but once i knew they were selling modric i just couldn't pretend like i was happy with them

It was easy for me. My dad's grandparents are from the Balearic Islands and my mom's paternal grandparents are from outside of Barcelona. If that wasn't enough, I think Barca play the most beautiful version of soccer ever. And I love that they were small guys with massive talent and tiny egos.

Following ManU since I was little... Great grandfather was stationed on Manchester during and after WW2 so he got me hooked on Manu since I knew what soccer was~

My son went to a Man U soccer camp and we watched couple matches and toured the stadium etc. liked them ever since

Used to watch only WCs and was taken to young Michael Owen after this goal against Argentina in '98... remembered he played for Liverpool...
A few years would pass and I started to get into it more due to more coverage on TV... so the above, along with an anti-ManUre mind set + history... made it an easy decision. Honestly, it took a little while of watching before I realized they were my team and then one day while watching and losing i got that same feeling in my stomach... like I would experience if LSU or Saints lost..

Picking a team based solely on ethnicity, politics, and religion promotes tribalism. Pick a team because you feel an emotional connection while watching them play. You're probably more directly related to a random TD poster, than anyone from your ethnic homeland.
I used to support the Houston Dynamo much more fervently in the past because Houston is the closest MLS team to San Antonio. The Dynamo lost a few of their more likable players (Holden, Kamara, until this season Ricardo Clark), and played boring football. I only tacitly follow their results now. I'd much rather watch Sporting KC or Seattle in MLS, than watch Houston at this point.
Chances are you'll enjoy watching a good team like Man United or Barcelona. You'll get called a bandwagon fan. It doesn't matter, if you develop that emotional connection to your club.

Do not pick a team based on heritage or religion or whatever, unless you go to France all the time or something like that.
Just watch some games and find teams/players/traditions/fans/stadiums that you like, and you will eventually be attracted to a team.
The EPL gets the most exposure and it is in English, so it is definitely the easiest to follow.

well then you are fricked. everyone who likes one of the top teams is a bandwagon fan basically by definition. none of them think they are though because they all have some bullshite reason to like them.
