How do Americans choose which EPL club to root for?

or La Liga, Bundesliga, or any overseas clubs for that matter?
Being born and raised in the south, I've been littered with the "football is awesome, soccer is laaaaame" mentality, so I've only recently started keeping up with soccer. I'm just kinda faced with the issue of choosing a few overseas clubs (Houston Dynamo fan) to root for.
Of course I'm partial to the Spurs because of Clint Dempsey, and Chelsea a bit since the first club competition match I've ever sat down and watched was the 2011-12 Champions League Final. But I feel like I'll need a better reason, especially since I hate being a "bandwagon fan."

I chose United because they were on TV the most when I was a kid, they rocked on FIFA, and my mom found a pair of old MUFC Umbro shorts at a thrift store for me to wear when I played U10.

I always say this:
Watch the Premier League Review Show on Fox Soccer at 7pm on Sundays (replayed a dozen times throughout the week).
That way you'll get to see every match, every goal, every player. You'll get an idea of who you like, who the best players are--with and without the ball--and which teams may appeal to you.
I became a City fan because I heard Carlos Tevez' name every single week. Then noticed what a passionate player he was (as well as being a hell of a good and opportunistic striker). I had no clue about all the money that had been recently poured into the club by their Arab overlords. But by the time I realized they were the Boston Red Sox, it was too late.
Now, YaYa Toure is my favorite player and City is still my favorite team. Really don't hate any other team, although I'm not a fan of Stoke or Sunderland. QPR is high on my shite list too because of Joey Barton's antics (I know he's gone, but frick QPR).
Don't worry about the band wagon label. You have to start somewhere.

It plays on FOX Sports once a week as well. Time changes, though.

I watched EPL for a few years before I found myself rooting for Arsenal over the others. Just watch the matches and you'll find a team.
As for La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, etc, I still don't really have favorites yet.
But I have watched enough Argentine soccer to know I prefer River Plate > Boca

I started playing FIFA when I was ten, around the time I started playing select soccer. The coaches encouraged us to watch some EPL games and see how the pros did it. The first team that I saw was Liverpool and I become infatuated with Stevie G. His strikes from distance and his passion for the game got me hooked and I've been following them ever since, along with using them in FIFA constantly (I'm 19 now, fwiw).

I'm choosing to be a Houston Dynamo fan simply because it's the closest, and I grew up an Astros fan.

Lazio are also known as Nazio, and there's a reason for that. PSG, Real and Chelsea have a fascist element in their support.
City, Chelsea, Barca, Real and PSG spend money out the wazoo and are either massively in debt or on their way to being massively in debt.
Barcelona is the Catalan team. Athletic Bilbao is the Basque team. Real was Franco's team.
AC Milan is run by Silvio Berlusconi.
