"I think that's an idea that we will put" to football's rules-making panel, Gerard Houllier, a member of the FIFA technical study group, said at a briefing on Wednesday.

Up to three replacements are currently allowed, even when knockout matches go to 30 extra minutes after scores are level in regulation time.

Houllier said changing the rules could see fewer players struggle with muscle problems in high-intensity matches.

"It's a good idea. Only in extra time. Maybe if someone is injured, why not?" the former France coach said.

eta: SIAP, I searched and looked in a few threads

I have no problem letting you have an extra sub if you have to play an extra 30 minutes.

Good rule.

Was thinking of this the other day. Glad they're exploring it.

Reminds me of how basketball gives you an extra timeout if you go to OT. Plus this is for the safety of players. If someone is too tired, they could be more easily hurt. Good idea IMO.

I'd prefer an extra sub over water breaks.

But it's obvious both will be needed in Qatar

This Fifa fellow is obviously a bandwagon fan that is only interested during the World Cup and is coming up with such a silly and ridiculous change to the long established laws of the game.

I'm all for this change, but I still think offside makes soccer a pansy sport, and the goals should be widened and penalty kicks should only be given in the 6 yard box.

Rules changing soccer as a sport such asoffsides =\= rules that change administrative things such as substitutions and yellow card accumulation.
Huge difference

This is a good idea.

Which means FIFA will not adopt it.

I would prefer to see a more significant increase in subs. I understand that fitness and energy management are large parts of the game, but this World Cup has had many games that seemed more like marathons

Agreed. I think adding two more subs would enhance the game, not kill it. The one caveat is that they need to make the transitions faster.

I say ONLY if it's an injury.
