quote:We were not one of the groups that benefited from that, IMO. 3/4s of our group is ranked inside of the top 26 of FIFA's rankings and the one that isn't is a solid South American squad that qualified with wins over Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia on the same amount of points as Brazil to get in. We didn't really get anyone you'd consider an "expansion" team.
However, the group stage is way more diluted this World Cup given the expanded field. I’m sure that might have something to do with it.

Last WC team had a lot of great stuff. Ball control was fantastic, outstanding passing and possession in the midfield. They just couldn’t attack for shite.
We played haji wright, Pepi and josh Sargent. Our forwards were such trash last cycle.
I remember watching the knock out game with Holland and thinking of all you did was flip Memphis Depay we aren’t better, but we’d have a punchers chance against most teams.
Flo isn’t Depay, but he is so much more dangerous than anyone we’ve had in that position in a long time and it makes everything so much easier.
We also haven’t played a game yet where it’s their strength (attack) on our weakness (defensive consistency).
But the US is genuinely fun to watch and it’s been a minute since that statement has been true.

We'll let it play out and we're obviously excited but if we're being fair we have played two bad teams in a watered down format in the United States.
Technically Paraguay wouldn’t have qualified in 2022 because they finished 6 in CONMEBOL but they finished in a 4 way tie with Colombia, Uruguay, and Brazil and 1 point behind Ecuador for 2nd.
Australia finished 2nd in AFC qualifying and would have still qualified directly in 2022.
So sure we haven’t played France, but to down play the two teams we’ve played is foolish.

I’ve never seen another US team capable of dominating a group like we are.
Downplay that accomplishment with a qualifying statement about 48 teams if you must, but it is of little consequence either way. This team is legit.

What? We are the highest ranked team in our group. When is the last time that has happened ?

Really?
Go look at these two teams that the US just played and beat.
Australia made it to quarters last cup.
Paraguay beat both Brazil and Argentina in qualifiers.

Yeah I’m not buying the watered down group stage argument. Scoring multiple goals and winning multiple games is just something I will never take for granted given our usual results in these kind of big time tournaments. USMNTs of old would’ve lost these last two games or grinded out anxiety inducing draws.
We are however somewhat lucky that we haven’t played a team with a strong and creative attack that can exploit our biggest weakness in the defense but I’m gonna enjoy this ride when it lasts and no one can bring me down from that

Allowed only 10 goals in South American qualifying. They are a legit team defensively and USA shredded them.

Berhalter was also terrible especially after the 2022 WC. Team just stopped responding to him.
I agree that he took them as far as he could. But, Gregg deserves a lot of credit for building the *team* mentality in the group as a whole.
Argentine Russel Crowe has taken it to the next level, but Gregg's fingerprints are still all over this squad. Aside from Reyna, they clearly loved the guy.

We had Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas as our stars.

Yeah in the 90s I am talking about say circa mid 2000s on.
From around that time soccer was big enough that the guys playing had played and developed from kids on with legit training.
As noted before the 94 team was basically a miracle on their performance. I feel like this performance is what we should be the last few times

That’s not abnormal or new at this cup. See Mexico, USA Canada all at top of group. Think Qatar is the only host nation ever not to make it to knockout rounds

Sorry. I meant highest ranked, which is pot 1 unless you are a host. We would not have been pot 1 without hosting and the expanded format this year.
We benefited from both the expanded format and the host. Paraguay would not be in this World Cup without the expanded format.

Adrenaline, hustle, and heart is what it was. 11 Rudy Reuttigers who wouldn’t back down.
Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey were the last remnants of this kind of mindset. Between bob and gregg we went soft on this front, trying to be more European, culminating with the tnt debacle.
Poch so far has seemed to elevate the tactical element of our game. Now we just need to light the flame of that indomitable American spirit again and for the first time ever, we just might be a team everybody is looking to avoid.
