I think that the diamond was meant to get Bradley farther up the field, allow him to receive the ball there, and allow him to pressure the opponent's deepest midfielder.
I really think we played in two fairly well defined banks of four defensively in this game, and I don't think that Bradley was allowed the freedom that he would have been allowed in the diamond formation with three central midfielders behind him. I don't know if this was a change made after the goal, but Altidore/Dempsey/Aron were never really allowed to track back as they were in the Nigeria game.

Donovan would have been a nice option to have as a withdrawn forward now that Jozy is probably out for the tournament. It would have worked better with the poacher's we seem to have in Aron and Wondo.

The decision to leave Donovan off this team will always be one of the craziest decisions I have ever experienced as a sports fan.

Yeah it doesn't make sense, considering how worthless Brad Davis is likely to be. Also it's crazy that we didn't bring another target forward since our system seems to rely on one. Without Jozy are we just going to play a super counterattacking 4-4-2 or something?

The single striker system is so important to what we are trying to do that I'm amazed we didn't bring Boyd in.
I honestly don't know how we are going to set up if Altidore is out. Do we just go early 2000's 4-4-2 and try to break at speed? Do we play with Dempsey as a lone striker with Bradley behind him? I don't like our options going forward to be quite honest, and all of this would have been alleviated if we had brought either Boyd or Donovan.

I think I said this in another thread, but if I was in charge of the US team, I would never call Wondo, Davis, or Green in for the World Cup. There are so many guys I rate higher than them.
With Jozy out, and who knows what's going on with Deuce, the depth is abysmal. We will need to go with Bradley and Jones every game, with either Mix or Beckerman as the third central midfielder. That's the only way to offset the lack of midfield depth. Then, use Bedoya and Zusi for the wide role in a 65/25 split or so, and hope that Dempsey and Bacon can go the whole 90.
I'm realistically looking at a roster with 2 legit subs in midfield and offense (Zusi/Bedoya and Mix), which is depressing as hell. And in defense, I don't view Yedlin as viable at all, and Omar sucks. SO we have 6 guys there.
One thing that can help big time is if Chandler can play wide in midfield. His lack of soccer IQ won't be as problematic there, and he is a dynamic guy.

Aron plays as a winger quite a bit, right? I don't think we'd need a huge change in our central midfield with Dempsey and Aron instead of Dempsey and Jozy. Just make sure Dempsey runs more and comes back, and if he can't do it because of his breathing, then maybe play Mix instead of Beckerman (or at least have him ready to come in the 45th minute).

The play Jozy got hurt on was actually a pretty nice ball from Bradley that could have been something. Not having Jozy coming back for the ball certainly took away a solid passing option for Bradley.
Plus without Jozy up top, they were able to apply more pressure on Bradley.

Isn't it encouraging that we beat a team that has historically owned us despite a poor performance from Bradley, an early exit from Jozy and an injured Dempsey?

Yep. I like AJ but he isn't exactly the outlet we are used to distributing to out of the back
