All transactions, and basically any idea of wealth or the value of anything, are arguably contingent of our social construct.
In other words, you all aren’t making a novel or even particularly insightful point.

Ok do this, go sleep in a field or a ditch for a month then come back and tell us if you think that’s better than living in a house.

It's still an investment, just bequeathed to their children.
If they have children. More and more people don’t.
In any of those cases, it would be much more accurate to call it a gift (or maybe an investment for someone else) rather than a personal investment.
The book makes the argument that it should solely be considered an expense either way. I’m not sure I would go that far.

Did I say that people shouldn’t live in houses?

Edit: Has it ever occurred to you, that you could possibly be *SO DUMB* that it renders you incapable of even realizing you're dumb?

But I am looking at my notions and taking a bunch of arrows on a message board while I sound them out. How many people who are calling me names have ever stopped to ask ‘Why do I believe X?’
We already know why you believe what you believe. your generation has all the cards, but the deck has been stacked against you. Where home ownership was attainable for past generations of Americans, inflation has crippled your economic future. You cant afford homes, barely afford food, college is beyond affordable for lower class income families, vehicles are ridiculously expensive and the cost of living is criminal.

God or nature of the spaghetti monster didn’t create you with the life purpose of owning a house (substitute any of the 100 other things you have been convinced that you have to own). Is it an assumption that the US should continue building new houses forever?
This post gave me Lyme disease.

Ahh, so you’re one of these self-styled intellectuals who believe you got that shite figured out while bumping around your few decades on the big blue ball.

Here’s another. Have at it

How often do you critically look at why you do the things that you do? Have you ever done it?

Not at all.

Every single day for probably at least twice as long as you've been alive.

There are lots of things we do that we weren’t put on the earth to do. Why choose owning a home to single out?

Whatever the market calls for.

There are people that prefer the older homes (me included again). But the home construction industry can’t make much money off of those people
Did you not update your old home to all these newer materials and whatnot. I know you are not still rocking the 70's woodgrain paneling and shag carpet. Hell, you most likely put in a tankless waterheater and maybe even solar.
Modern conviences aside, I do not mind older homes. In fact I own a few. But of course, I update them because they need it. Most people do not wish to take care of an older home. There is time and expense baked into that. Of course the expense isn't as much as total price of a new home, but they pay that price for the sake of simplicity. That more than any marketing sceme is most likely to blame. Most people now do not even know how to change a flat tire (seriously). How would you expect them to take care of an older house?

What percentage of people who call their homes investments never sell them before dying
Investment =/= financial gain
To many it is the investment in family, a chance to give their kids better than what they had, and most of all security and just plain old memories.

I agree. My purpose on earth is not to own a house.
Now what?
I want to own a house. I own a house... well I rent it from the government.
I was not put on this earth to own a car either. I was not put on this earth to own shoes or a belt. Yet I want to and do.
Point???
I think we should build a houses forever because old houses don't last forever.
I think a new house should be built whenever someone coughs up the money to buy the house. Not because that is their purpose, but because they want a place to live and call a "home".
