The only time I ever listen now is for Saints or LSU games while on the road or for hurricane info.

I have never been able to listen to the damn station just 70 miles up the road in Baton Rouge
That's because we are in what is called -- and what about five remaining living humans understand -- a skip zone. It was made much worse when the towers for 'L moved from the lakeshore down to Lafitte. Used to be a local all the way up to Jackson, MS., even more so BTR.

40 years ago a revised FCC rule would have allowed 870 to have an FM repeater in downtown Baton Rouge. Couldn't get anyone interested.

See my username for the basis of today's tech-talk, and thank you for your attention to this matter.

Scoot is a hypocritical arse hole. But I am sometimes amused at his hatred for anything Trump. He has a deep case of TDS.
BY the way , he hates Steven Miller more the Donald.

Still I can only take WWL for a short while.

As someone who knew Mr Hap, you would know he was only ever trashed on the weekends. Mr Early at WWL TV would not tolerate drunks in the studio

Caption says this is from 1947. Looking at all the water around it, I'm wondering if this photo was taken after the Labor Day hurricane came through that year. That was Dad's freshman year at LSU when the first day of classes were cancelled for that hurricane.

WWL started going downhill when David Tyree died

My favorite David Tyree story was when he called in on Rush Limbaugh when Rush was talking about gay people.

But yes, WWL AM is signal has become trash. There was a time when engineers prided themselves on having a nice clear far reaching signal. Now most of that is lost to the FCC squeezing so many stations on the AM and FM bands, new digital signals streams hidden in the audio carrier, and corporate bean counters that only care about a signal reaching their local clients.

Fun fact AM Radio stations sometimes need multiple antenna towers to broadcast and use the ground surface around them to amplify the skywave which makes AM radio such a long distance medium. I think WWL lost some of this antenna array for Ida or Katrina.

The Hurricane Katrina coverage on WWL radio was outstanding, but that was the last time I listened to that station for any length of time. Over the years, corporate has cut the news budget down to the bone. If you listen to the hourly 5 minute newscast, much of the content comes from WWL-TV and CBS radio.
Not a single talk host is particularly compelling in my opinion.

To add to that, some of the “news” cut ins are central cast where one station might record several of these segments for several stations in a station group from a particular region across different markets. Then with AI, one day your radio newscaster could be a computer if it is not already being done.

The definition of “woke”is now absurdly broad for some of you guys.

What was mainstream a few years ago is now being called “woke”. It’s become
just a word to use as a cudgel against someone or something that some people disagree with on a couple of issues…

I grew up practically next to WWL's Marrero towers. At night the signal was so strong you could hear the voices coming from copper pipes in the walls, as well as any electronic device if your held your finger close enough to it. The voices in the walls used to scare me before I figured out what was going on.

Haven't listened to WWL in years. The morning shows along with the others were about 13 minutes of show in the one hour on air. Rest is weather, traffic, commercials.

Kristian Garic said Tommy Tucker was A DEI Clown.

I agree with Kristian and recommend his program. His is the best Radio Show in the area….and it’s not close.

You nailed it, and he usually follows that up with how down the middle his radio talk show is.
