The time you save from not having to commute has to be yours. Otherwise there is no point.

If a company is telling a person "you need to start coming in to the office or you can find employment elsewhere", you can bet your arse they don't consider that person their top talent. Odds are the person is barely pulling their weight while working at home, which is why they don't care if he leaves.

Yes. My wife runs that company. Obamacare forced me to leave the business because our healthcare costs rose from $400/month to $2000/month.

Big gov't needs big business. Big business buys Rs and Ds.

Nice link to provable data.

Our company continues to grow by leaps and bounds.
When I talk to customers, they aren't in the office.
When we visit customers, their offices are empty.

When I talk to vendors, they aren't in the office.

It's just the new way. It gives employers more working hours per day, happier employees, and reduced overhead. Companies are saving a shite ton on paper, toner, electricity, etc.

That's not true in every case, by a long shot. Some bosses are just douchebags with tunnel vision. You can't honestly believe that in all the world, every situation plays out like your scenario.

We lost two amazing senior level people that carried a ton of the workload when our company went hybrid. They asked to remain remote. The company said nope. So they immediately found other jobs where they were allowed to be 100% remote. Then, our company begged and pleaded for them to return because they were impossible to replace. Your scenario assumes the talent pool is deep for skilled positions. It isn't.

Pay cut would depend on where I could live and cost of living versus where I’d have to work.

The downside to remote work is that you can make yourself vulnerable to a much wider pool of applicants and potentially be offshored. Basically, you could become even more of a replaceable cog.

The closer people are to the business line, the safer their jobs usually are in my experience.

This! All day. I’m a GenXer and luckily I get to travel a bunch to the corners of the Earth but I much prefer an office environment if for no other reason than the situational awareness that comes from in person, face to face conversations. Lots of side-band info as well.

ETA: I drove 45 minutes each way in my last job. I actually found it gave me enough time to wrap up the work day or to just think about the upcoming day’s goals. It’s not for everyone and maybe it’s because I have probably benefited from “proximity bias,” which used to be called “getting to know your team.” My new company is a PE backed SaaS company so there was no choice. 100% remote.

What part of "odds are" confused you? I didn't make some dumbass straw man out of your post, you can extend me the same courtesy.

Read what I said again, and read it carefully. My scenario doesn't assume anything other than the company's view of the value of that employee. If the view is incorrect the company has larger problems than sorting out who can work from home and who can't.

Then, our company begged and pleaded for them to return because they were impossible to replace.

That scenario has been happening forever, well before work at home was an issue.

I don't have a blanket problem with remote work; my wife was doing it well before covid. But some people can't handle it, that's just a fact. It makes perfect sense for a company to adjust to that reality.

Also another means of severing communal ties and actual relationships between real people. Everything is being moved online.

Only for jobs where you sit on a computer all day. Many of us actually have work to do at the workplace.

As someone now running a legit and profitable side hustle from within my home, I fully endorse and confirm the above statement in bold.

It is very, very difficult to maintain any degree of focus while in your own domicile surrounded by all your own hard earned possessions and amenities. I already work a 50-60 hour week at my full-time, and literally have to structure my schedule to basically lock myself in the project room for 6 hours each Saturday and Sunday with the radio cranked up in order to accomplish what I need to get done. If I even decide to come out just to get a quick bite to eat, I'm very likely to find something else to eat my attention and not ever finish what I originally intended to do. If I'm physically at work, away from home, my sole focus is 100% on work with little worry about becoming distracted.

I know there are those of you that can/do easily go right into "work mode" at your own house, but it's very difficult I believe for many of us to do the same.

It depends on the job and the industry.

It's not all roses. The more labor is viewed as a nameless commodity, the worse it is for labor. People never consider that.

I took $35k more to go back into the office at another company.

Prior to Covid, working remote was pretty uncommon speak.

That's a rather pessimistic attitude, not to mention a little crazy sounding. The only thing preventing a work life balance in that instance is you. I transitioned from a 100% in office to a 100% remote and the improvement in my work life balance is definitely positive.

No more hour commute to work, getting stuck in traffic, taking meetings while driving. I get am extra 2-3 hours per day back that I wasn't getting paid more to work, and I'm able to accomplish small things around the house between meetings and focus time.
