I would seriously consider it. We are "allies" with a bunch of ideologically suspect nations that were only going through the motions of being allies. They just wanted to free ride on defense while taking advantage of our markets.

I think this is a decent topic of conversation to be had. The Crux of the issue.

If that is your opinion that Europe is an adversary then I can see why you wouldn’t want an alliance with Europe.

But if that’s your motivation…. do you think that Trump’s new global League of Nations called “Board of Peace” MORE represents a group that is pro-free speech and pro-christian ideals?

That doesn’t reconcile.

And why would pro-christian ideals be the primary criteria if in the US we have long adhered to the doctrine of a separation between church and state? Freedom to worship your own religion peacefully.

Why do they refuse to pay into those entities what they agreed to pay? Maybe you should understand better

They gotta pay into it - yes. So I agree with that and I can see the benefits to forcing them to actually provide their fair share and allocate resources for their own defense. The freeloading was actually working before because they were our lapdogs and we could afford the carrying costs.

The UN is another story altogether…

Yessir.

I want a global realignment.

Let China have Europe.

I want Russia, Southeast Asia, all the Americas and Mexico.

Keep Australia in the fold, keep a strong relationship with Japan.

Be strategic in Africa and the Middle East.

Put some distance between Israel. Time to revamp that relationship and flip the script.

Canada is low priority until they have an attitude adjustment.

How can you say we could afford to carry them as we are 38 trillion in debt. Every dollar we borrow will be needing 10 paid back. There is nothing American people get by being members of those two entities other than taxpayers owing more

Because it worked. We won the Cold War.

But the Debt is a separate, bigger topic.

We could list off many many things that cause debt. Everyone has their favorites.

Govt bailouts for businesses and to banks who are paying and rewarding unscrupulous bankers’ bonuses while destroying pension and retirement funds in a financial crisis also causes debt.

NATO should have been dissolved when the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pack fell apart

So yes. We should leave NATO

So let’s tweak it to benefit us more. I’m not opposed to modifications.

I'd read this speech before, had to go look it up again. This is taken from George Washington's farewell address to the nation, which he sent to the Philadelphia Daily American Advertiser where it was published on September 19, 1796.

quote:

“The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none; or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities. Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people under an efficient government. the period is not far off when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality we may at any time resolve upon to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.”

I’d be okay with a treaty that says we will provide material support in the form of bullets and equipment in the event of a military threat to Europe but does not require us to send our military.

If threatening to leave is the mechanism to get Europe to pay more, fine…

But the logic for dissolving an alliance we created and that has benefitted us is missing

The previous world wars are done. The current cold world war that is going on does not match us with a lot of the members of NATO. The old alliance is worthless. Get us out now.

Clipped from George Washington's farewell address, which was pretty well focused on European affairs.
