A lot of people I know say they could but can't even go rabbit or squirrel hunting.

If you were faced with pulling the trigger could you, and often if needed?

Me, yes.

As opposed to letting someone inside your home where they will almost assuredly kill you?

If someone today is breaking into an occupied house, I can't imagine they aren't prepared to kill whoever is inside.

Apples to oranges much?

Hmm...imminent mortal threat to family and self vs. plinking off a squirrel minding its own business.

Totally related.

I believe I could. The few times where i've heard a noise in the night or thought someone may be trying to get in (thankfully they've all been false alarms), my immediate thoughts were not on the life of a potential intruder. My immediate thoughts were, "Get to your weapon. If you go down, mrs Jiminy is defenseless and could be raped or killed . Find threat, terminate threat." And for me it's that simple.

And for the record, I disagree that dropping an intruder who has threatened the life of me and my loved ones is the extreme. It's the expectation. When I married my wife, I vowed to protect her even at the cost of my own life. So escalating to that level of violence is anything but extreme to me.

This is my take, it would be hard to pull the trigger but if it’s him or me, I’m choosing him

I mean you don't have an option...if it's me and my family vs you and yours...I'm taking yours out every time.

As would most, assuming they have a weapon at hand. At that point, it's basic survival instinct.

Big difference between being the hunter and being the hunted. I don't even kill mosquitos but I would easily shoot someone trying to break in and possibly cause harm to my family.

I have a harder time shooting an animal than I would someone breaking into my home. At least when I am out hunting, I'm just doing it to feed my family but there is a slight bit of guilt as that animal likely has done me no wrong. Someone breaks into my house, where my family is sleeping, that remorse would in no way exist.

Sometimes I hold my Remington 870 in a rocking chair with the front door unlocked hoping someone comes inside

I would rename this thread to "Would you do the "Basic" duty to defend your home and family?"

And my answer is without question or hesitation.
The only form of gun control for me is using 2 hands.

This is a very long video by a retired policeman about self defense and the pitfalls that can occur, but if you have the time it is absolutely fantastic advice.

One of the things he points out is that you never chat on social media about your plans to blast someone in your house.

Retired police officer talks about the dos and don'ts of self defense

Here is the key part about online behavior if you want to save time

You're on the wrong website for that kind of assumption.

I don't really think defending your home from intruder is comparable to killing an animal that poses zero physical threat to you or your loved ones.

I appreciate what he's getting at, but if someone breaks into your home and you shoot them, I don't think your online post history is going to make much of a difference in your case.

The better question would be who wouldn't protect their family
