I love old movies and growing up out here in the midst of the industry, I was more or less not surprised to know one's political affiliations due to their lifestyle, statements or what have you.

For fun, I thought I'd share a few actors/actresses political affiliations with you. Keep in mind that both Pubs and Dems were more conservative back in those days.

But, some of you may be amused to find out that a few of your favorite actors and actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood were not a part of the political party you may have thought.

Many actors, like Cary Grant, were apolitical in the sense that they didn't believe in publicly spouting off about politics, religion, etc., and their personal beliefs because in Gary's own words, "none of us actors are experts in the field of politics and religion and we should keep our mouths shut. We're experts in entertainment!" If only the actors and actresses of today would follow such advice.

This list isn't exhaustive, just a few....from my MGM files, in this corner.......

Many of the actors of that era served in WWII. I think Lee Marvin was a decorated soldier.
It didn't take long after the war for Hollywood to turn left.

Fredric March, John Garfield, Paul Muni, and Edward G. Robinson were members of the U.S. Communist Party among a few other lesser known actors. A few writers and producers were, also. Dalton Trumbo was the most notable of these.

Charlton Heston and Ronald Reagan were Democrats during at least part of their Hollywood careers. Reagan switched parties, I believe, in the 50s, and Heston in the early 60s.

Surprised about Johnny Carson.

Dean Martin voted Republican except for John F . Kennedy:

Martin was raised an authentic Italian Catholic, but didn't speak about his faith and appears to have been largely non-religious.
Martin was a lifelong Republican, except when it came to supporting John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Reagan and Heston were in the Dems at first; however, the Dems were more conservative than the Pubs are today. Frank Sinatra was also originally a Dem and switched to the Pubs in 1960 after Peter Lawford "messed up" the plans for the Kennedys to spend their visit to Palm Springs, California, at his house. Instead, the Kennedys went and stayed at Bing Crosby's home, a noted and big Republican supporter.

Sinatra was so mad at the Kennedys that he switched parties and never supported the Dems again.

Carson was a bit of a surprise, too. So was James Garner for me.

Martin was, indeed, a Republican; however, he didn't support Kennedy. He supported Lyndon B. Johnson.

This list is not accurate. For just one example, Cesar Romero was a leftist and praised Castro.

Lucille Ball only registered with the Party back in the 1930's because her father was a member. However, she never actively supported them or had any association with them whatsoever.

As Desi Arnaz, her husband, said to the live audience for the first taping of, "I Love Lucy", after she gave testimony..."the only thing red about Lucy is her hair. And even that isn't real!"

Not really when you consider his friends in the business he hung out with. Still, Paul Newman was on the conservative side -- nothing like the wacky Dems of today.

His wife, Joanne Woodward, was from Georgia and her conservatism had an influence on Paul. They had a wonderful marriage.

The each party’s positions on many issues have not been stagnant over the past 80 years. So, without knowing what the party platform was in each decade it’s hard to pass any kind of judgments.

For example, being a staunch Democrat today is significantly different than one in the 60s. I imagine culturally both parties were much closer than they are today.
