A 19% VAT tax is applied to every purchase in Europe with the exception of very few items (second hand, etc.)

They have no income tax or monstrous government arm that is in charge of collecting like the IRS. Sales tax is easier to collect and ensures everyone pays into the system.

One more reason Europe is light years ahead of the US.

In theory, yes. In practice, within a decade we would end up both with a 20% sales tax and an income tax system.

100%. Sales taxes are the way to go because they are largely unavoidable and require very little bureaucracy to collect and enforce.

Who is "they" in this sentence?

I support abolishing income tax in favor of sales tax.

But, um, European nations have income taxes.

Our corrupt pols would never allow it. They would lose too much control. I like a flat tax personally. Everyone pays 15%. Basic business writes offs only.

Why are European nations going bankrupt?

Is it because people are buying from Amazon and Craiglist?

Sales tax is inherently regressive. The poor and working class are going to be paying a higher percentage of their income in taxes than someone well-to-do who is able to invest a much larger percentage of their earned income.

The best system is no taxation at all, but barring that, a completely flat tax with a deduction up to 1.5x the poverty level is workable.

Yes. Taxes would go down for those of us who pay taxes now, and it would broaden the tax base by preventing people who work under the table or get paid mostly in cash from being able to avoid paying taxes....illegals, cash-tipped hospitality workers, hair dressers, etc.

No deduction. The whole point of a flat tax system is that everyone has skin in the game.

You could exempt certain items from the sales tax...basic groceries, baby food/diapers, etc. Then lower income people would only pay tax on luxury or non-necessity items.

I get that, but I'm okay with no one paying an income tax on stuff less than, say, $25,000.

As I've said, I'd prefer no federal taxation whatsoever, but that's about as likely as me starting for the Warriors next season.

I like user taxes, those who use pay- eliminate Income tax and property tax

Sales Tax

Gasoline Tax

Utility Tax

If you use it you pay for it. The more you use the more you are taxed- you have some control over your taxes

Sounds good in theory but politicians have to find a way to pad their pockets

Fairtax only happens after Constitution is amended to eliminate income tax.
