That said, there is some relevance to IQ, for sure. It does correlate pretty highly with life outcomes (it correlates more than even education).

Not that I don't believe you, but my experience has been more aligned with super smart on paper people being weird af. A guy I knew in high school got a 36 on the ACT and dropped out of college because he thought he was too smart for college. Last I heard, he's in jail for possession of child pornography.

For reference, the "30 point rule" states that people with 30 IQ points on other people cannot effectively communicate with them. An average person of 100 IQ has a hard time talking to a "handicapped" person of IQ 70. Likewise a man of 130 IQ will have a hard time with a 100 IQ man. I don't really believe it, though, because it is an obvious logical fallacy).

If he wants to make a point that he can't effectively teach complex models of whatever to someone with a low IQ, it's a valid observation. But that restricts effective communication to a very narrow scope.

Effective communication-- in a broader context-- usually requires a willingness between both parties, and a touch of empathy / compassion. In this way, smarter human beings have more than enough capacity to communicate with less intelligent humans, and even animals. So, Langan's limitations seem to be based strictly on his arrogance and unwillingness to find common ground with those he deems less than him, which I guess is everybody.

I like philosophy. I've read Kant, Nietzsche, Descartes, Berkeley, Hume, Russell, and Leibniz (perhaps the smartest man to ever live). I try to keep up with the modern people like Searle, Dennett, Foucalt, etc. I also try and read pop-sci when I can from the physicists like Greene, Smolin, Gott, Kaku, Thorne, Hawking, etc.

Problem is, philosophy never goes anywhere. At some point you have to admit that solving the "mind-body" problem wont happen. They've tried for 2 thousand years now and never really gotten anywhere. We're still stuck where Aristotle left us. Sure, there's been tons of work done since then, but none of it convincing. No one agrees on anything.

Meanwhile science has progressed beyond imagination. That's because they ignore all the useless stuff like "mind-body" and "free will." None of that matters to science - you can still do physics without worrying about "why there's something rather than nothing." If you ask a cosmologist "what happened before the big bang" he will look at you funny. He will say "it's undefined and the question makes no sense."

I am not saying mind-body and free-will isn't interesting (it is), but it seems intractable. It's like solipsism - and interesting idea, but totally unprovable (and unfalsifiable).

You’re complicating what was a simple, ignorant statement from Kentucky. Philosophy builds knowledge. So does science. To state that philosophy is irrelevant compared to science ignores the similarities and differences between the two.

I think it's really interesting how concerned with ranking and declaring superiority the typical poster here is. I'm totally ok with you thinking I have a low IQ because my opinions differ from yours. Smart people generally don't feel the need to convince people of their intelligence.

He could hammer the specific nail you pointed to, but couldn't follow instructions that would require him to hammer several nails to complete a task unsupervised.

You do NOT have a low IQ. You have an average IQ. If you read The Bell Curve (which you have not because you are average) you would learn that people associate with their 5th (plus or minus 1).

The 5 are:
Retarded
Stupid
Average
Smart
Really Smart

People who are 'smart' interact with their own kind plus 'really smart' who they are impressed with and 'average' who they deem to be dull. They never encounter the really stupid and tards in their day to day relations.

We consider you 'dull'. So give us a nice down vote and then off to bed with you like a good girl.

Philosophy informs science which informs more philosophy. It's a reciprocal and interdependent system.

He based his argument on the "30 point rule", which hasn't been demonstrated, to my limited knowledge. Langan is the perfect example of why the actualized is nearly always better than the potential.

Look at IQ needed for long term planning, like farming. Now look at countries that don't have food...
