If you’re going to respond with paragraphs, you have to do it during business hours when I’m sitting in front of a computer!

That surprises you?

The whole idea is that people would be better citizens for a mass public education, therefore society would benefit more than vocational training, which teaches a trade, but not citizenship.

What they missed is that such a thing is guaranteed to fail given enough time.

That’s ok. You apparently stopped reading when you got to that point and assumed the rest.

Why isn’t this indicative of some abnormality or problem with the test? At minimum, a result that extreme makes me question how well the tested population, curriculum, and assessment actually align.

Lo fricking l.

It’s a statewide assessment test.

Students in other districts aren’t all failing.

I'm not sure what point you think you're making. He was correct but that doesn't mean that he thought that we should all be shitting on vocational training as if learning a trade made you some kind of loser. That's the mistake we made. We decided to start acting as if every single human alive should be going to college and quite obviously that's silly. And what we ended up with is a bunch of people in college incapable of really getting what they need to out of it who probably would have made excellent trades people but everybody told them they would be failures if they did that

I’m sure it would surprise the average poster.

I agree with him. I also value the humanities and higher education in general.

Are all the districts across the state using the same math curriculum and pacing guides?

In 1955, our educational institutions hadn’t yet been hijacked by the left. If he could see the quality of our schools today, the perverted priorities of the teachers’ unions, and the leftist curriculum, he’d be appalled.

I doubt he would believe a social media feed, which is treated as gospel here.

Hate it for the kid, but I have to give Mom credit for walking the walk. 99% of other Progs virtue signal about this while their kids are in the best schools.

I’d suggest if anyone “walked any walk” it was the poor kid.

The mom did nothing except subject her own child to the consequences of advancing her precious political agenda.

They’re all working from the Maryland state standards for Math. Don’t play dumb.

Nope.

Read every word.

But hey, I don't want to assume anything. You said the cause of the whole debacle was neglect.

I don't think that's true. If the cause is neglect, then ceasing to neglect the situation means it would turn around.

But I think it's inherently doomed from the outset based on it's very ontology.

So what did I miss after that sentence (which was pretty close to the end of the post) that changes any of that?

The average poster realizes that—like so many leftist ideas—it sounds great on paper, but it doesn't work in reality.

Don't bother to argue that point. Just tell me what the functional adult literacy rate in the US is right now. Then tell me what the literacy rate is for high school graduates. Then remember that that doesn't even count dropouts and privately schooled kids.

As do I, but they should not be a major and should not be taught with the biases they have for the last 40 years. I post from experience having taken hours of philosophy, linguistics, literature, history along with a STEM major. One got less from the professors pushing an agenda in those classes. Just write what you know they want to read and you got your A.

Again, I value the idea of them also.

Not so much the modern application of the idea.

I agree with you that, as currently applied, they are a waste of money as a major. You're basically paying someone to indoctrinate you in leftist radical ideology.

However, if they were taught objectively, there's no reason at all for someone to not choose them as a major.

A minor, unless you want to become a teacher or go to law school.
