Where the Hell do you get this revisionist nonsense? Over 80% of Americans who identify as Black have an ancestor who was held as a slave in the United States. If you remove recent (1st and 2nd generation) immigrants, the percentage approaches 100%. Even among recent Black immigrants, a small majoritycome from the Caribbean, and THEIR ancestors were held as slaves in the Islands.

Outside the South, true. In the South, much less so. Curiously, the New Orleans area is an exception, because it had a LOT of direct immigration from Europe after the Civil War. Housing patterns were such that immigrant communities lived together and did not intermarry, so you still see lots of older Whites in New Orleans who are (for example) pure Irish or pure Italian (mostly Sicilian).

Texas is also distinct from the other Confederate states, because only a small percentage of the antebellum settlers brought slaves. My 1832 immigrant ancestors did not, for example. My slaveholding ancestors came to Texas after the War and married into the family of the earlier immigrants.

You are conflating some ancestry with direct ancestry.
By that logic, a huge swath of whites with a small percentage of black, slave-tied ancestry (and vice versa including black slave owners) would theoretically "cancel out". This is why the definitions have changed, and it became about privilege and not lineage. But by all means, start writing checks to the Nigerians down the street if that makes you feel virtuous, but lets not pretend that reparation policy is anything other than insane.

The topic of this thread is not "reparations," but rather the ancestry of Angela Davis. The corollary (which I addressed) is your asinine assertion that "the vast majority of american blacks have no slave ancestry"). Let's be clear what YOU said, and what I addressed. NO SLAVE ANCESTRY.

But since you raise the issue, as public policy "reparations" are almost as stupid as your assertion that the "vast majority" of American Blacks have "no slave ancestry."

Well, that is not what you SAID, but let's pursue that. By all means, explain (your perception of) the difference between (a) "direct ancestry" and (b) "some ancestry."

I am particularly interested to learn about "indirect ancestry" (which would seem to equate to your concept of "some ancestry"). I am inferring that you are thinking of "collateral descent," which has absolutely no bearing upon this discussion at all, because "collateral ancestors" are "ancestors" only by marriage and contribute nothing to a person's genetic makeup (e.g. your grandmother's SECOND husband, when you are descended from the first).
