Projecting strength - that’s tough to do. The Chinese are still way behind there. And numbers are only a part of the requirement.

Their officer corps is nothing but a bunch of robots that can't make their own decisions. They're not good at operating independently when the battlefield changes.

China's navy is already at our level and still growing
why do people act like they know what they are talking about while being totally dead wrong

the us has nearly twice as many carriers as the rest of humanity combined. ftr, china has 2. and carriers are still critical for naval strategic advantage, particularly in the arena of fighters since they are of limited range.

where the chinese navy nearly equals the us is in subs. they don't have as many stealth subs (90db) but the number is growing, the stealth is increasing and they are continuing to innovate. it is absolutely an area of concern

however, stealth subs now are only as good as their compliments - sub surface sonar arrays, satellites, etc.

altogether, the chinese military is still way behind the us military, especially in space warfare. the us has a several decade head start in this aspect.

last, military conflict between the two is economically complicated. it's impossible to imagine that the two would break out into conflict while the rest of the world sits idly by. moreover, the two economies are closely intertwined. both sides know this. most importantly, the chinese know that the us has the nuclear capability of obliterating them while still standing a chance of survival. china can't say the same. the us has a burgeoning laser apparatus that is going to make chinese missiles all but obsolete. china is trying to follow suit but, by the time they get to an advantageous position, the us will have already developed laser countermeasures (IRCM) which are being researched

Well I’m of the school of thought that aircraft carriers are obsolete and we just don’t know it yet. They’re more of a symbol of national might than anything else. They’re so expensive and huge that losing one in battle is almost inconceivable yet they are a very inviting target. A target that is becoming increasingly vulnerable to high speed cruise and ballistic missiles.

Correct. Large carriers will be the dreadnoughts of the next major war.

And we do have a significant lead in submarine technology. As of today.

They’ve got one aircraft carrier and a regional navy. They aren’t going far.

They have two aircraft carriers now and at least one, maybe two under construction. And they don’t need to go far. They only want to control the east and south China seas.

It's also worth noting that the Chinese have a navy base in Djibouti and also have just built a large port in Northern Kenya. They'll also likely be taking over control of another port in Mombasa when Kenya defaults on the loan early next year. It's clear that they also want to be able to control the Indian Ocean.

Unless one of us develops a nuclear missile shield in the next decade it’s all kind of irrelevant isn’t it?

They’re great at funneling money to the people in charge.

Like anyone in power but with 0 oversight.

OP...

It may be a paradox, but quantity < quality when it comes to military.

US military tech is much more advanced than China's. They aren't even comparable. China can only outmatch the US in personnel.

Where was it under Obama?

Having served in US Army and coming from a family that has served back to great grandparents, Obama was an existential threat. (How the left missuses that phrase.)

Still greater than the next 10 military powers combined. Let me guess though. You believe Trump when he says the military was running out of bullets under Obama.

As of today, NATO minus the US would lose a conventional war to the Chinese. For that matter, I’m not sure if NATO minus the US could fight off the Arab league.

To give you an idea of how weak European military forces are, the entire British Army (active duty and reserves) is about half the size of the our Army Guard component.

I thought they would have a bigger military than us already, they've got a couple of more citizens to tap than we do.

Can someone layout how the US is so far ahead, or are people just saying this out of arrogance?
