I know a guy who used to make himself sick ranting about politics (he is/was a Republican). Always on the internet, always picking fights, hated Obama, hated Hillary, etc. He was sort of a miserable guy. The kind of guy you have to hide on facebook.

Over the summer the dude just walked away. He told me that he concluded that all politicians are equally dishonest and corrupt, his head was out of balance, and he was washing his hands of it. He stopped posting, stopped reacting to every news item. and started working out. He's lost 25 lbs. He's suddenly a nice happy person. His wife likes him better.

Is this a legit thing? Will walking away make you happier? I think so

ETA: he still votes R

These past 2 years are the first years following politics that have made me a more jolly person.

Sure, that is exactly what the politicians want.

That way if you lived in Alabama for example you might even be conned into believing Doug Jones is a "moderate".

How can you ignore politics when all our ills have been caused by government?

I’m happier when I check out for a while.

It’s kinda like eating carbs. I feel much better when I’m low carbing but I can’t stay away from them totally. Sometimes (like today) I over indulge and end up feeling terrible.

Yes, we will all be much happier if we forget about politics and just allow some Leftist Dictator to take charge and give us Paradise on Earth.

Not ignoring it entirely. That might make you happier short term, but will come back to bite you eventually when your left living in a shite-show of a country.

But no, your daily well being should not depend on the shittiness of the people in charge. Gotta be able to let politics go for the majority of the time. Else every day will be shitty

There was a story out some years ago that claimed people were happier if they:

1. avoided the news

2. were married

3. lived in a small town

4. had a pet

what's that ancient quote? goes something like:

“Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn't mean politics won't take an interest in you. ”

I’ve got the last three covered. But I like to know what’s going on, more than avoiding the irritations. It’s reality, and can hurt you if you turn your back on danger.

Or we could continue to allow establishment dictate who our President will be, like we have for the last 100-plus years.

What's the difference?

Yes.

The problem with politics is there are people who never shut up about it, and those people are always frightfully one-sided and overwhelmingly negative. It's very tiresome.

I get it, you hate Trump/Hillary/Obama/Bush.

I really only started following when Trump came along but it’s beem awesome. Though I’m sure if Hilary had won I’d either have quit paying attention or would be miserable

I think it’s more about learning to not let things you can’t control bother you as much. This extends way beyond politics but does apply here.

If politics is actively stressing you out on a daily basis then you need to either learn how to manage it or give it up altogether. Plenty of people can follow politics and not let it bleed into their daily lives.
