My wife is a small business owner who has been directly affected by the virus. Her income for the next two months has pretty much disappeared. $2k a month is less than what she would have made, so I'll take my share to supplement hers.

That has to be the overall idea right?
I can roll with that perspective.

The problem you have with identifying the people who really need it is the delays you run into figuring out who does, and add on top of that who decides?
This is one instance where I’m actually ok with the government doing this, even if it further blows up the deficit. I’d pick an arbitrary number (100k income threshold for individuals) and let it fly.
I have enough lower income people buying and selling houses so I know how close to the margins they are running. A month, and it looks like it will be at least that long disruption in their income will be catastrophic

I don’t like it. As a conservative, I believe we should be ensuring that paychecks still flow rather than just giving everyone a base income for two months. That’s a slippery arse slope that I don’t want to go down as a country.
The problem is this, though:
At this point, I really don’t see any other way to keep the economy in positive territory.

It's only for working people. Why would they give free money to people who are already on government assistance? They did not have an interruption in income.

Makes no sense

when politicians enact policy that frick over their constituents, the only way they can avoid proper accounting is to bribe those constituents. people from LA don't understand this as much b/c historically our politicians just steal from us and we get nothing in response

I don’t think Trump is trying to buy votes. I’m pretty sure he’s not part of the Yang Gang. The logistics of actually getting it to those directly affected are probably too cumbersome and would delay the process thus losing its effectiveness.

Yes, lets punish those who can or must continue to work. Use their tax dollars to give money to others. Seems fair.

To boost the confidence of investors and consumers. People tend to spend less during times of uncertainty.

You don’t have to accept it. I didn’t the $600 under Obama.

Or, better yet, remove the payroll tax.
What good does that do if you aren’t drawing a check?

Everyone is effected by this, plus it's a red tape nightmare if they try and figure out who is home without work or not. It's simple this way, gives everyone money back that they have paid into the system and helps give a slight boost to the economy.
I plan to give my check to friends that are waiters who aren't working and need it. If you don't need the check, then try doing something similar

The government is the one who is stopping people from going to work. They owe us.
