Why was Ross Perot so popular in 1992?

I do not remember that election as I was young but getting 18 percent as a third-party candidate is unheard of.
What was it about him that made him get that many votes?

Because people read HW's lips.

Because he was a populist running against a seemingly invincible GOP candidate and a Democrat whose party hadn’t won in 12 years.
He was also able to blanket the airwaves with infomercials pushing his policy plans to raise visibility.

Looking back, Perot wouldve probably been an awesome president. Especially considering the other options.

I voted for Perot.
Don’t ask.
I was a wee lass.

He was the non government outsider, similar to Trump.
This blows my mind….Perot was 62 when he ran. I picture him as a 75-80 year old.

He was a populist and both Bush and Clinton had some serious flaws.

I’m old enough to remember when 41 was at about a 95% approval rating and the joke was that the Dems were trying to pick some sucker to be the guy who will get assrammed by him.

All I remember is how funny the Dana Carvey SNL Debate skits were

He had a strong populist message and wasn't running as the candidate of either major party. He was an incredibly successful businessman who had never been in any sort of political office but had a very direct way of speaking to the common voter (sound familiar?).
He was doing surprisingly well in the polls when the dirty politics (opposition research) started leaking things to the press. Not having been in politics, he didn't realize that getting all fired up about "Republican hit squads" (or something similar) at every turn was just making him look like a tinfoil-hat conspiracy freak. All that momentum quickly faded in over the course of that summer and into the election.

Like Trump, Perot was a millionaire from private business.
So, he could make the greatest political quip ever:
"I've paid enough taxes in my life to buy a front row seat to Utopia. And I'm still waiting for the curtain to go up."

People assumed because he was a successful billionaire in business it would automagically translate to success in government.

My parents voted for him. My dad always regretted it because how Clinton turned out but he was pissed about HW's "no new taxes gaffe" and NAFTA killed our little town (HW signed it a month after the election, but it was "in the air")
Clinton/Gore in '92 had campaign signs with the Confederate flag on them and ran as "Sons of Dixie." Fooled a lot of people - Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana all went blue.
That massive $1 trillion national debt got people's attention as well - Perot ran on eliminating that debt.

He would have been amazing during the .com and tech boom.

His issue was, he hadn't really thought out beyond the initial push of 'I have a message that will resonate with people and I'm gonna run for President.'
I have no doubt he could have actually done a decent job of governing, but the powers that be quickly figured out this issue and pounced.
A good example was the VP choice he sort of pulled out of his arse. By all accounts, Admiral Stockdale was a really good upstanding guy. He had no business being thrust into the VP choice and onto a debate stage seemingly overnight.

Amazing how HW just collapsed in the 18 months following the Gulf War.
