Construction management degrees can lead to good jobs.

Too many kids were lead to business degrees that lead to flipping burgers.

Welding is a very well paying profession if you are willing to travel.

Money is out there if one is willing to go and get it.Sitting on the couch won't get a damn thing.

Construction Mana is good. I worked for one of the public traded ones for several years. Good Ags there. Background in finance but am learning the gc end of building homes. Cut cost down by at least 10%.

There are plenty of very well paying jobs out there, folks just have to get off their lazy butts and pursue them.

A little sweat and hard work never hurt anyone.

You are on the right path.

it is not up to the parents today or any day to pay for your education if it means putting the parents deeper into debt. I get the vibe from some on here that it is.

I think most decent parents, to whatever degree possible, would try to help set their child up for success. If what they want to do requires a college degree and they have proven that they are responsible enough to not get to school and fart around for six years why wouldn't you pay as much as you can to help them?

College used to be about cultivating intellectual curiosity and expanding the mind.
Now it’s nothing more than a training ground for gaining a job and meeting society needs.
In that light, there are multiple, more cost effective ways to develop a skill set for employment.

Employers used to train you if you had a college degree - in fact, all higher-end jobs required a college degree...it was the first step in the door, it showed you were smart enough to train. (What a misconception that was...it meant you had money and wanted to take off 4 years of your life before beginning adulthood and having to work.)

Now all employers want is skill - they don't have the time to train you and you're not going to be a "company man" at that place for 40 years.

I love the scene in Secret of My Success...when Michael J. Fox is interviewing for Wall Street jobs and everyone is turning him down...

And the interviewer says, sorry we require experience and skill.

And Fox responds: "Well, why the hell did I go to College then?"

Interviewer: "You had fun, right?"

And this was back in the 80's. It's even more useless now like a degree in 19th century French poetry.

More millionaires that started in construction and trades than those with 4-year degrees. Your narrow POV is part of the problem.

They started and ran a company successfully. That takes brains. Thanks for agreeing.

Not going to college doesn't mean you are destined to be on the end of a shovel. Many ways to make a very good living using your head without a college degree, sales and IT are two.

Never said anything about getting those "smarts" from college in my post. People learn how to be successful in many ways.

Let me see. They are getting free room and board at mom and dad's as opposed to paying for a dorm. That's one help there. More than likely m&d are paying for the car and insurance that little Johnny is driving around town. That's number two. In my case, I helped pay for some of the books my stepson need for classes. That's number three.

Exactly at what age in your kid's life do you cut the cord? Remember, I said why should parents put themselves into debt when little Johnny can do the same to himself? Rich parents? The financial burden on them doesn't apply.

Here's a question for you. If blue collar parents can squeeze by in helping little Johnny with his finances, should he pay them back?

Is this where a bunch of white collar people who went to college to avoid blue collar work espouse its many virtues?

my parents had this discussion with...I when...

No one sent me to college, I decided to go to better myself and learn things like English, and how to use it to express ideas and shite.

I could've made more money not going to college and doing work I hated, but I chose to go to college and work at a job I love. Money isn't everything, happiness and grammar count for something.
