They have a policy that if you offend the government then your entire family goes to work camps. Two generations up and two generations down. So your grandparents, parents, siblings (and their kids) your kids and grandkids. If you don't have kids or grandkids and they are born in the camps then they will spend their entire (probably short) lives in the camps. Having something so terrible happen to people you love is a big part of the reason why.

This plays into it more than people realize. They literally believe that KJU is a living god. he's not mortal like them. It also explains why we don't send in assassins or whatnot. The people are not prepared to see a real life breathing just randomly die or get murdered. The populace would fall apart.

There is international law that states can't conduct assassinations.

Looking through this thread,it seems some posters under-estimate how insulated the N.K. government manages to be.And how much control they have over the population.

Every NK person under age 30 has gone through the education system that teaches them Dear Leader is God.
They are taught that Kim does not take a dump. This is not a joke. They are taught he is shitless.

In a word - Stability

they live in a very stable society with a very clear distinctions about where they fit, who is in charge and who their enemies are.

Is any of it real? No. Are their living conditions good? Hell no. Have they undergone one of the largest scale mental conditioning programs ever? Quite likely. All told, it's done under the guise of stability and there is comfort in stability.

Going back to the French Jacobins, revolutionaries nearly always come from the educated or middle classes. Almost never from the peasants. Lenin's father was a school teacher, for example. NK has done a good job of making sure the fate of those groups is inextricably tied to that of the regime, through a combination of rewards and harsh punishments.

Reminds me of the attribution to Ole Hickory regarding Worcester v. Georgia.

Norko is a liberal's wet dream... if those are even allowed in Norko.

Wasn't Vice the first news organization to record undercover video in North Korea, showing the atrocities? I'm pretty sure they're known as liberal.

My SIL grew up 25 km from the North Korean border and she says the rural North Korean DO know . They sneak through her village at night , completely disheveled, stealing food , and there is even a network of Chinese who hide and shelter them . She says there is a phrase in Chinese “ one bag of rice - one wife, two bags of rice - two wives” that speaks to the value of N Korean brides. I think that those in Pyongyang are generally living WAY above the North Korean mean and are invested in preserving the status quo and these are the only people Western travelers encounter. I think it would fold like a house of cards outside the military and Pyongyang. Those people would bolt for the borders.

To me it sounds like the days of the true true believers died or started to diminish with the famine. When you hear accounts from generations that lived predominantly under Sung, the brainwashing is just incredible. I think it's still there, but heavily mixed with fear and fatalism at this point.

Some of those people must have relatives in the ARMED military, no? I don't understand how the collective armed military of that country allows their situation to continue.

Hot take:

-Lack of belief and/or solidarity because they are immersed in propaganda-filled media environment

-Lack of organizational resources

-Suppression of oppositional leadership

How could it be that none of those "fed" pictured have friends or relatives that they know are part of the "not fed"? At some point, wouldn't you think they would come to collectively realize that they are actually in a position to do something about it?
