I can’t image being a parent or a kid between 1964-1975. Wondering if your child will be selected. Will your child want to serve their country knowing they would go.
Being a "kid" during those years I can tell you it was a very unsettling feeling to say the list. I was like a sword hanging over your head. Some of us had high draft numbers and did not end up having to go. But you never knew for sure. We understood how people who had influence took advantage of it, but would never say anything derogatory about anybody that served. Its shameful.

a cornerstone of the gops campaign against kerry was the swift boat "yeah sure he went to vietnam but he was a pussy"
cant comment on how i would have handled it. was an infant during vietnam, never faced a draft. my dad said his dad, who served several years in ww2, told him to do whatever it took not to go, said war is hell. he had just finished medical school and wound up working for the navy in boston in some capacity evaluating returning soldiers. got canned for denying some high ranking officer demanding full disability for what amounted to a broken wrist.
wound up getting reinstated on the senate floor by i think jim sasser from tennessee
id never criticize anyone who served, and im reluctant to do same to those that figured out a way to not go. its a little easier to mock the wealthy fortunate sons who didn't. and anyone from that era wo didn't serveand runs for office should be prepared to face tough questions

NOOOOO. When you graduated from college your exemption went away and you were back in the pool. I had to go to the custom House down on canal street twice for physicals after graduation.

The only one of the last five presidents who served in the military was George W. Bush. Yet, Dan Rather and 60 Minutes ran a hit piece during the 2004 election attacking him for allegedly pulling favors to get into the National Guard. As always the media ran with negative story about a Republican that was not verified and later debunked. Rather an the producer Mary Mapes got humiliated, but mission accomplished they aired a hit piece on the Republican candidate for president. Contrast that with how hard the media fought the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Remind me when Obama, Hillary, Biden or Harris served.

I would take it one step further than that.
Why do people on the Left get mad at people for using the rules to the full extent to help them. Its like they get mad because they didnt think of it. But the rules are their for everybody.

Considering Biden did literally the exact same thing, it is even more odd as a means of attack. Biden had multiple deferments due to asthma even though he was a lifeguard and supposed star football player.
The reality is our government was throwing young men into a meat grinder for a meaningless war. I don't blame anybody for getting out of that if they could.

This same group of people celebrates figures like Muhammad Ali for doing the exact same thing. Weren't they causing all kinds of riots stateside in protest of that war? Tone deaf hypocrisy at its purest form.
Because he’s Republican. They can’t help but contradict themselves to advance their political agenda.
It’s too bad the Obama/Biden legacy will be destroyed on January 20th even after all these years of trying to demonize Trump and Republicans.
They failed.

But he DID pull favors to get in the National Guard. Lots of people pulled favors to do so---that's no secret. But you have to hand it to Bush. While serving in the Alabama National Guard, not one Viet Cong invaded the state!

The war was all but won then Walter Cronkite turned commie and the left went full steam against it 100%. In the end the Vietnamese conflict was successful in stopping Chinese military expansion for 70 years running.

well obama turned 18 in 1977 and would have missed the vietnam draft
don't think they ever drafted women so hillary and kamala are off the hook
biden likely went the same fortunate son route as trump to avoid service so frick him

That's easy, because you have brave Americans like Richard Blumenthal and Bill Clinton who went to war when they were called upon and fought for this great nation....

Thank you, for your post. My dad was blind by army standards and never worried but plenty of friends did. I’ve always felt bad for Vietnam vets. Feel like they were called, responded and then the country ignored their needs for years. I imagine I’d be a dove but could see how many enlisted.

Fighting any war (unless fending off an invasion) is dumb.
Great way to end up dead or badly maimed just for a lousy pension and worse healthcare.

Did Trump dodge the draft? Yep, as did many with wealth and privilege.
The rest either fled to Canada or went to VN.

When I was a recruiter I’d have ppl like you hang up and say my kid is too good for that. What’s the difference? Again it’s a voluntary military and usually filled by the same families with generations serving.
