Why does soccer seem to be coded "liberal"?

Certainly not saying that everyone who likes soccer or plays soccer is a liberal. I don't watch or follow soccer, but it seems like good exercise to play it, and good way to develop speed and balance for younger kids. But watching it for entertainment value has always felt pretty extrusiating, to each their own.

But for the people who do tend to follow and watch soccer. They seem to be much more left wing than say football or baseball fans. There is almost a bit of snobbery behind their interest in the sport, like guys who insist IPAs taste so good and the unsophisticated just don't have the refined tastes to understand it.

Because the soy boys are Europhiles and latch on to everything Euro, and soccer happens to be the major sport.

Thats how it became associated with leftists. Their love of "trains" is similar.

Soccer fans seem to embrace the Europhile type politics. It's part of them wanting America to be like "the rest of the world".

Because they rarely score.

My kids play and I dont think there is a single liberal parent on any of their teams. With that said, soccer is gay and there is probbaly no hope for my children.

And minimal contact causes mass drama.

Easy for girly men to play.

Idk, but it ruined the sport for me. I was a huge USMNT team fan and a member of the american outlaws which was the fan group for it that you see hosting HUGE watch parties every world cup.

Around 2020 american outlaws shifted from a fan group to full blown covid/BLM propaganda machine....I quit (was a chapter VP at the time) and have fallen off following the team since.

I just wanna watch sports...

It all comes down to why they like it. It's popular with the left because it's an answer to Ugly American Football, and they like Euro things because Europe is way more socialist than us on average.

It's countercultural. I follow it and enjoy watching Premier League on weekend mornings before football games start. And the World Cup is my favorite sporting event. But agree about the neckbeard and IPAs angle. Most American soccer fans are annoying nerds.

It’s an international sport and attracts people who are internationally minded, and in some cases, prefer it because it isn’t one of the American big three. If you prefer other country’s sport to the sport of your countrymen, there is a good chance that you are the type of person who thinks you’re better/smarter than the people around you

Isn't soccer associated with nationalism and more conservative politics in Europe?

I feel like this is mostly an MLS fan issue.

I love soccer, but MLS hipsters are awful to be around. I swear they'd get their asses kicked in most stadiums around the world outside of America.

There's never been a better time for you to start following the United States Men's National Rugby Team.

We're playing Portugal in Lisbon on November 9th.

I think it is more along class lines in England. Soccer is more middle and lower class and rugby is more upper class and middle class. That is how it was explained to me when I was there. No idea about other countries.

Right.

The funny part, is most soccer players and fans abroad are probably more conservative, yet our Europhiles dont quite realize this.

More nuanced than that. There are socialist clubs and nationalist clubs. In general:

- I think the euro affinity has some legs. But more than that, it's not baseball or football so people who didn't latch on to those all-American games had an outlet where they could reject apple pie traditionalism and be "different."

- Note that this is primarily about spectator stuff, and mostly US premier league fans and MLS fans. They don't fit in with the families at MLB games or the dudes at NFL games so here we are. Of course, that's changing some as both leagues are mainstreamed into the US consciousness. Go look at any other genre loved by dorks and it'll traditionally lean left - Star Wars, Marvel, etc.

- I don't think playing soccer has the same coding, or at least not as explicitly. I think its rise accompanied everybody gets a trophy and the general softening of American boys, so it's more libby than baseball/football. But growing up, our hardcore soccer guys were more likely to party with stoners than have ANTIFA sympathies.
