Because, ultimately, Americans are kindhearted folks who typically want to help the downtrodden. It's why slavery was abolished and the civil rights movement happened.

But in the modern discourse when damn near every overt obstacle has been removed, any minute claim to victimhood gets elevated to the national consciousness.
