Why didn't we use the South Korean approach?

Why didn't we contact trace from day 1? Use the power and ingenuity of Silicon Valley from the outset and we would not be in this predicament. Why haven't we implemented coordinated national contact tracing yet? The technology already exists.

It would have been wrapped around the axle by day 3 in NYC.

We didn’t have the volume of tests per person as SK

South Korea has over 50 million people. They tested more than 50 people for every confirmed case. We have tested less than 6 for every confirmed case.

Seoul has a larger population than New York City.
South Korea has 240 deaths, New York City has over 11,000.

Why didn't we concentrate the volume we did have to the most infected areas and then contact trace while we ramped up testing capabilities. Why didn't we learn from the most successful containment and eradication method? Why is New York at a ratio of not even 3 to 1 with positive versus total tests performed and South Korea achieved over 50 to 1.

They respected it and we didn't for far too long...They have a central administration running the show...it was never a political football there...the have much lower privacy exceptions so they could trace people with apps...they had an infrastructure and plan in place for pandemics in place; they executed the playbook.

The playbook is there and we're still ignoring it. I agree 100%.

I'm just spitballing here but maybe it's because the United States is not South Korea.

Are we still allowed to learn from South Korea?

Why not follow the Japanese model? They have only done 1000 tests per million people (we’ve done 15k/million). Their death numbers look good

The key is smart testing and the number of tests performed per positive test. Japan has tested more than 10 per positive and the US is under 6. We're under 3 in New York and just over 2 in New Jersey. Basically, We've been testing sick people as opposed to testing sick people plus all the people the sick people may have come in contact with. Thus, New York and New Jersey have, by far, more deaths per capita than any other place on Earth.
